For puppies you can be a free member of Petback Protect. It's a National database of dogs so that if yours goes missing they have ways of finding it as the dogs details are made available to vets, rescue centres, dog wardens, police and animal charities. They get a pet tag which includes all the details of your pet.

  • This is a good idea......but I would personally recommend dog (and cat etc!) owners to get their pet microchipped aswell as relying on a tag on the collar.

From my experience as a Veterinary Nurse, quite a few dog and cats can lose their collars when they go missing, so they do not then have any identification on them when found as a "stray" (the tag is still on the lost collar!). If they have been microchipped they will be scanned when they are taken to a Veterinary Surgery or Rescue Centre thereby enabling them to be reunited with their owner......a happy ending!

Also, when dog/catnapping takes place, the collar would be removed, again making them untraceable.......if they have been microchipped you can then prove ownership!

Perhaps use a combination of the two just to be on the safe-side? (I know this isn't really moneysaving as having your pet microchipped will cost money, sorry!)
  • I'm afraid to say all the microchipping in the world will not stop pet theft, I had my cat stolen last year (on my 30th birthday when I was 8 months pregnant might I add), she had been chipped for a few years, chipping is a great way of being re-united with your pet should they wander astray and a kind sole should pick them up and take them to the local vets but unless they can be tracked in some way (which they can't) when they are stolen a microchip is not worth the effort I am afraid!
Cats have 9 lives, we only get 1 so live a little! :rotfl:
  • Don't automatically assume that if your micro chipped cat or dog is handed in to a rescue centre that they will phone you to let you know that they have it. Some Centres assume that if you haven't checked with them that they have your pet, that you're not all that bothered and they don't want to return it to a home where the pet isn't valued.

Thats so sad that somebody took your kitty (So Sorry) I also think it is horrible that resuce centers dont always contact the owners if they have not been contacted (they tend to get carried away and think and lost pet was unloved!). Cats can travel a hell of a long way and may turn up in a centre miles away.
My cat she is called Prince is well traveled she is a Black cat who I found in Mallorca when she was a few weeks old. I have now brought her over to the UK (which was not an easy task very expensive too) I would be heart broken if she was stolen but 1) she is a moggy and 2) she is a scaredy cat so it is unlikely!

Absolutely! And I would just like to add ...

I'm the proud owner of four dogs, all of whom are micro-chipped. One evening one of the dogs wandered off while my son was walking her off-lead. Apparently she was picked up within minutes of becoming 'lost' by a passing police car and taken to a local police station five miles away.

After spending the entire night searching for her in the area where she had suddenly (and uncharacteristically) 'disappeared', I phoned the police station very early the next morning ... and was alarmed to find that she was being held in the kennels there, awaiting collection by the dog warden ... who would have taken her to a dog pound in Liverpool (some 30 miles away). Once installed there, I would have had to pay £70 to reclaim her! (Plus transport costs there and back as I'm not a car owner/driver).

Money is not the issue ... but my question is: what exactly is the point of going to the trouble & expense of having a pet microchipped when neither the police, dog wardens, or rescue centres bother to act upon the information contained in the micro-chip?

Incidentally, just in case anyone STILL thinks that microchipping is worthwhile ... our local council (Sefton, Merseyside) holds ocassional micro-chipping sessions which are free of charge to pet owners in receipt of various state benefits.

    Cheers,
    ZED.
  • Hi,

found all your posts interesting about pet micro chipping. I bought my cat from the RSPCA, for £45.00 which included micro chipping, but going off the posts on here, seems like it's a waste of time. Am not happy to think that i could be labelled a "bad" owner, just because I do not ring round all the vets/police stations/animal sancturies etc, when that could be alot of phone calls from me, yet only one from them!

With all due respect how do you know your pet was stolen? It could have been run over. Also I've read cases of animals being returned to their rightful owners years after they've gone missing because they've eventually been scanned!

Chipping is absolutely the way to go. We took in a lost kitten a few weeks ago and the first thing we did ( as in that night! ) was take her to our vet to be scanned. If she'd had a chip she'ld have been back with her owner. We assume she was just abandoned as despite advertising she was never claimed.

She won't be leaving my house until she has been chipped!

What a load of bunkem, The dog warden would have scanned your dog in the morning, you should think yourself lucky that after your sons careless actions a police bothered to stop and collect her as this has never been in the police's remit. In fact this policeman probably saved your dog from ending up under a car somewhere. I work in rescue and trust me we certainly do not want to keep animals that have been allowed to wander by careless owners any longer than we have to. So in future maybe you should take more care with your pets and be grateful if someone rescues them for you !"
