Clio t reg imoboliser problem. bypass???

Hi as with many renaults i have the fault of the sticking imoboliser, turn ignition and it flashes constantly (which means it won't start) so i central lock the car for 30 secs then unlock and start ignition and the light goes out and 9 out of 10 it starts. I asked a garage how much to switch it off and they said £160. I found a website which tells you how to turn it off, but im worried incase i make a mess of it all. Has anyone had the same problem and if so how did you fix it? Would taking the battery out and in fix it do you think? im confussed! lol

tampering with the immobiliser is never a good idea - you could lock it out and immobilise your car completely.
As for by passing - if it's a decent system then bypassing will be near impossible for anyone other than a professional car thief. If you can by pass it then it's probably not worth the hassle of having it because if you can by pass it, an opportunist can too.

Whilst not exactly cheap i'd have thought taking to to either the place that installed the immobilier or an approved centre would be your best bet. I've done that in the past - definitely worth it. Especially if the immobiliser is listed as a security feature on your insurance and gives you a discount. You only want approved and trained guys touching it.
With the car being around 10years old I don't imagine the dealer would be the best idea. they'll charge you an arm and a leg and i wouldn't have thought the car is worth a several hundred pound bill.

If the garage you went to is looking for £160 it sounds to me as though that's the charge for a complete removal rather than just disabling it.

Where in Scotland are you? I took my car to "The Sunroof Centre" in East Kilbride a few years ago. On one occasion my car wouldn't start due to thieves destroying the immobiliser but by doing that it meant the car would never start. One of the guys (called Liam who's mentioned in their website) came to the house and did a temporary fix to get me through the day and i took it to them for a proper fix that night after work.

I have no connections with the place but have used them in the past.

  • tried both keys, some times it starts up fine as i say but other times turn key half and light constantly flashes, try locking unlocking car and it sometimes work, think the imobiliser itself is located above the mirror, i have no leaks etc just seems to be a common fault with Renault. Don't want to pay £100's for it, 1 day the car might decide not to start at all then i will be truly f****d! lol
