Advice regarding car insurance - no claims discount?

Hi

As a relatively new driver I'm hoping for a bit of advice regarding my car insurance.

I've been driving for a year and had my car for a year. My insurance is due for renewal in three weeks and I'm planning on changing supplier. My question is regarding my no claims discount - I had assumed this would be 1 year, given that I've been insured for one year. However, on my renewal notice, the price quoted from my current insurer states a 2 years no claims discount? Does this mean, when I apply for quotes from other insurers, that I state I have 2 years no claims discount? And does my renewal quote count as proof of my no cliams?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Do not throw out your renewal as yes it does count as proof of your no claims. Insurers usually require you to send it to them once you take out your new policy just to confirm.

When you search for new quotes, yes you can say you have 2 years NCB. As slummymummy says, keep your renewal letter just incase new insurer wants to see it as proof.
Keep it for the year, don't throw it away after a few months because if they don't want to see the proof now, they might in the event of a claim.

Also (if you haven't already) make sure your current insurer doesn't have you on auto renewal. If they do you will need to phone them and tell them you aren't renewing.
That is of course if you get a cheaper quote.

  • Thank you very much for the information, it is much appreciated. :)

  • Make sure you go through the cheaper car insurance on this site, then delete your cookies on the computer and try and see if you can also get cash back as well (make sure you have deleted the cookies b4 you try this though as it won't track otherwise)
  • Thanks slummymummy :)

My car insurance last year was £550.

This year I discovered MSE and have saved already in so many ways. I followed the car insurance advice, and have found the cheapest provider - my car insurance is £330, with £45 cashback on top of that. So I'm really pleased. :j

My renewal quote from my current insurer was £475. So glad I knew to switch!

Thank you for your advice :)
