I noticed on a couple of the multiregion hack/cheap DVD player threads taht a few of you had mentioned that you had bought £20-odd players from supermarkets and they have played 'everything you have thrown at it'.
Story is, I want to get my OH the DVD boxset of Dexter S2 for Xmas. This is so far only out on R1 and there is not even a hint of when it might be out on R2. We have a perfectly healthy R2 DVD player at present.
As such, I don't want to spend a huge amount. I went on the Richer Sounds website on Thursday and they had some multiregion players for £19.95, but store-buy only and in places I couldn't get to. This is the sort of money I want to spend, max £35.
My question is, really;
Do any of you guys have a cheapo supermarket DVD player that you have found to be region-free? I understand that they can't sell it as region-free, but that if might be anyway. As it is a gift, I'd rather know this up front.
Thanks for your help. I have had a bit to drink so I hope this is clear!

The Philips DVP3120, which is sold by Richer Sounds on-line at £19.95 but about £30 in-store, is available from Argos or Tesco at about £29. This player is sold locked to region 2, but is easily unlocked by steps available on-line.0

Have you tried making your current player 'Region free'? Brand name? Model?0

Have a look on Amazon - I bought a region-free DVD player off there quite cheaply a while ago.0

Cheers guys!
Donnie; I have tried to look for an unlock code for the player I have but have found nothing. It's a Denca, but I can't find a model number for it. It's basically the dirt cheap pink one they were selling in Woolies a few years ago.
emc; as it's a present, I'd ideally like something that will be region-free out of the box.0 -
Philips DVP3120 Multiregion DVD Player 21.99.
Possibly there are others cheaper and better. This is just an example.0 -
If you do have a Richer Sounds nearby, they will match the web price if you mention the web price when you are in the shop.
1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. Enter 138931
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Play" button on the remote
It's as easy as that.0 -
Cheers for that site, Donnie, I'd not seen that before. Looks like my search over.
Thanks, guys.0
