How do you store spring onions?

They seem to go off on me really quickly and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I have wasted money on these by not using the whole bunch when I have bought it and the next time I come to use it, they have all gone brown.
I get so annoyed with myself whenever I throw food out though I have become a lot better than I used to.

They have lasted a bit longer when I have bought them from certain supermarkets but they cost so much more from them that I would like to just get them from my local fruit and veg shop which I recently discovered but they don't seem to last much longer than a day.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I normally keep mine in the fridge, and I sit them on, or wrap them in, kitchen towell so that they don't get all damp.

Nearly read that as ..... 'sit on them'..... lol

We store ours in a cold lobby....probably about the same temperature as a fridge.

I rarely use them since my husband died,I find that thinly sliced leeks are less upsetting to my tum.But when he was alive I used to put them in my cold conservatory or the unheated front porch.Anywhere cold used to work o.k. for me.
Even ordinary onions which are lovely can be a bit of a tummy upset, although red onions I have found are slightly milder.

How long do they last for you when you do that? Or are they used up quite quickly in your households?
  • we keep ours in the fridge too.
they mostly get eaten within a few days but do last over a week......actually i've just looked and there are some that are only just starting to 'go' and i mean only just starting, that were bought nearly two weeks ago!!!

I find the only way to keep them is to put them in the special bags you get from Lakeland that stop veg going off - they really work, same for mushrooms
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • As a lot of people have mentioned, I store my spring onions in the fridge. I usually find they keep for 1 - 2 weeks this way. I buy mine in Lidl if that makes any difference?
