calling cards for the US

I am going to New York in January for a week. I went earlier this year and spent a fortune buying calling cards from the hotel, which wouldnt have been so bad but I also had to have coins to insert in the pay phones in the hotel lobby.
Does anyone know of a calling card I can buy before I go which I can use to phone Ireland and the UK (ideally one that doesnt require coins on top.
Also, if i use a calling card to phone from my hotel room would I be charged a fee from the hotel?
