Hi guys,

I am buying a used car tomorrow. I have a private plate which i have the rentention documents for as it has been removed from my old car. Cost me £105. Rip off i know!

Anyway when i buy the car tomorrow the seller sends his V5 off to the dvla and gives me the new keeper bit. Is there anyway at all i can transfer my private plate onto the car in this process rather than wating for the V5 to come back in my name and then going through the process of changin g the plates?

Thanks for any help.

Paul

  • As long as the green New Keeper's Supplement that the seller gives you is from the most recent V5C, and it has not been used in a previous number plate transfer (if it has it would have a DVLA stamp and say re-registered as....[another reg mark]) then you can use this to put your plate on the vehicle.

You will need a form V62 to supplement it, from post Office, DVLA Office or downloadable from www.direct.gov.uk/motoringforms (£25 fee not needed as you will have slip), the MOT (if applicable), the new keeper's slip and your Retention Certificate V778 with the relevant section filled out. Take/post to Local DVLA Office and they will assign plate to vehicle for you.

If you have re-taxed the vehicle on purchase also send a copy of tax disc incase it has not updated on the vehicle record.

thanks for your reply. I thought there was a way.

    When you say

The seller of the car i am buying has also removed his private plate and has now received his updated V5 with the orginal reg re-assigned. Is this okay?

    Thanks

Yes that's fine if it's the one with the re-assigned mark TYPED on it, not hand-written.
