hi
basically i am having a new bathroom put in (tiling, bath, shower,wc,sink, radiators) and the old suite is getting taken out.
my question is do plumbers give guarantees to cover me against all the bathroom pipework leaking or if a year down the line i discover a leak will he say sorry its your old pipework-nothing to do with me. i know you will probably say ask him but end of the day id prefer to know what the norm is? ive lived in my house for 10 years and never had a leakage problem-am a bit concerned after this work, i notice theres been a leak. (im paying several thousand pounds but my current relationship with him is not perfect and im worried i get sc****d, maybe even by deliberate handiwork) dont get me wrong im not questionning his normal work or i wouldnt have gone with him. he seems very good and i cannot complain with work to date. however i dont think he likes me as ive questioned a few things(im quite good at sensing situations) thanks, any advice would be appreciated.

He will only guarantee his own work and supplied materials - none of the exisiting pipe-work, joints, unions etc will be covered. After all, he didn't install them.
Anyway, why would you think that a leak should develop - they don't normally.0 -
im a bit worried he doesnt like me and puts a hole in a pipe before tiling over it. thanks for advice-ta i wont be coverred. wasnt sure if in pressure testing the system it is to see if there are leaks?0

Make sure you supply tea and biscuits and you will have him eating out of your hand

Just a thought but i've got a letter on my desk offering me cover for plumbing and drainage emergency cover for just under £24 a year through Homeserve. It might not be moneysaving but it might be worth considering if you want the extra peace of mind. Check out your house insurance policy too ..you may well have emergency cover already so might be worrying over nothing.
Whether the tradesman like you or not, at the end of the day their reputation is at stake so to deliberately cause a leak etc wouldn't do themselves any favours. As i've found from previous bad experiences, putting your trust in a tradesman isn't always an easy thing to do. But making it clear to them you don't trust them really doesn't help either!

Why the hell would anyone cause a leak?0

This is a bit weird, why would you have someone working in your house if you don't trust them? If you don't get on now I promise you will be bitter enemies by the end of the work. Its not fair on either of you to go any further unless you can get this out in the open.
These situations always end up with both sides unhappy and feeling that the other party is deliberately winding them up, you will be looking for any fault, he will want to finish and get out, it doesn't work just don't go there!Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D0 -

And I thought I was paranoid!
There may be plumbers that are quite happy to stand and have a four letter slanging match with their clients, have their backside hanging from their trousers, drink 54 cups of tea a day, start at 11 and finish at 11.30, but the one thing a plumber really doesn't want to be known for is leaks, deliberate or otherwise, they are seriously bad news! So relax, he might leave a dead fish to rot under your bath but he won't fit pinholed pipe deliberately.:rotfl:0 -
razor, i trust his work as a plumber -he certainly knows his stuff. im just a bit worried that because ive put my foot down as a customer a few times he will hold it against me.
andrew-b many thanks for your advice regarding homeserve-its just the peace of mind i think i need- i'll look into it.
moneysavingplumber i hope he doesnt read this- lol rotting fish indeed-you may give him ideas
my dad knows a few people in the business-ill see if i can get a pressure test or something so i can get an independent viewpoint after the work is completed.
thanks for your advice guys. ive fell out with a few people near where i live and am overly weary nowadays whenever i do anything.
(paranoid ,lol. wasnt it mel gibson or somebody who said in a film just because you think people are out to get you ,doesnt mean they're not or something similar.)0 -
I was talking to my dad about that homeserve deal earlier ..he said to me he had taken that cover out himself for around £24, but come renewal they wanted around £85. So sounds a good deal for first year...but not such a great deal longer term. I had my suspicions it was too good a deal to be true!

No offence, but you sound like an absolute nightmare. Are you entirely compos mentis?0
