I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on hooking my ps2 upto my 576kbps broadband connection.
I've had a look around and i'm pretty confused about ethernet cables etc. I'd be grateful if someone could guide me on the cheapest and easiest way to do this. Oh I have an old school big and bulky ps2.
cheers.

I should be able to help. I have an old school ps2 and use it online.
You need a network adapter for the ps2. You can buy these in the shops - but many places no longer stock them as the newer slimline ps2's don't need them. You can get them on ebay for about £20. Worth trying Comet - my local store had one for about £16 the other day i noticed.
Once you have connected the adapter into your ps2 you then need to connect it to the internet. You can do this in a variety of ways. The easiest is to connect the ps2 to a router. You do this using an ethernet cable. Simply plug one end into the router and one end into the ps2.
If you do not have a router there is another slightly more complicated option. You can connect the ps2 to your pc and use the connection that your pc is using. This method requires your pc to be turned on when you want to play online n the ps2. To do this you would need to use a cross over cable (this looks the same as an ethernet cable but the wires inside are in a different order).
Before i go on i'm guessing you have already googled this and got some idea of how to do it? There are lots of tutorials on the web.
Here's one specifically for PES5:

Brilliant i've got a pretty good idea now of what I need. Going to go down the router option. Thanks for that although I doubt my girlfriend will be pleased at the news i'll be playing pro evo online into the wee small hours. Oh thanks as well for the pro evo forum as well.0

I'm getting confused again. i'm sure I understand the part with the network adaptor and the cable running into the router. However my pc uses an usb modem and so will I have to get a combined adsl modem/ router rather than just an ordinary router.
One other thing the cable supplied with the network adaptor how long is it as need it to be about 10m or so.
Thanks in advance and sorry for what is probably daft questions. Ha ha all this just so I can get beat of sum kid in germany at pro evo 5.0 -
I had a sneaky feeling you wanted to play Pes5. Personally i got my !!!!!! kicked by some 8 year olds for sevral hours last night (i'm 31!).
Firstly you don't get a cable with the network adapter. You can buy them pretty cheap. I got mine on ebay.
Now for the router.
It is possible to get a router that you can connect a usb modem to. However i would suggest spending a few extra quid and getting a modem/router. I use the netgear DG834G which seems pretty good.
Now if you got a router that has a wireless connection you have options (bearing in mind the router needs to be near a phone socket).
1). You could put the router near the Ps2. This would then mean a short cable. you could then connect the pc to the outer using a wireless connection. Downside hear is additional cost of a wireless adapter for the pc - but somtimes they do deals with adapters included with the router.
2). You could buy a wireless network bridge. effectively this will allow your ps2 to connect wirelssly to the router. Downside - big cost - techie - likely to get confusing!
3). Buy a long cable for when you want use the ps2. Downside = messy. But the cheapest option with least techie hassle!
4) Cheapest option. Buy a normal modem router. Plug it in near your ps2 when you play online then move it to your pc when you use that online. Downside is a hassle to keep moving it.
Personally option 1 is the tidiest. However option 2 is cheapest and easiest to setup.

PS: If you want a game my usrname is 'Hillfly.' on ps2 (note the fullstop at the end to get it up to the required 8 characters!)
PPS: Having checked a bit further it seems that you could get away with buying a router only (ie no modem) - but only if your usb modem has an ethernet socket as well (some do and some don't).Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0 -
you've been a great help. bidding on ebay for router/modem as we speak. Had a look for cables etc and the cost isn't that much. Hopefully wont be too long until i'm up and running. I'll keep a lookout for you. Thanks again.0

Is that as simple as it is? I always thought that you had to subscribe to some kind of gaming provider on top of your internet provider. If it is that simple I'll be getting hooked up very soon, cheers.0

PS2 doesn't require and subscription (unlike xbox). It's not quite such a smooth experience as Xbox live - but i like it and it's free once your all setup.Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0
