Hey

Just been given a coupon for www.fishoils4u.com for a buy one get one free, you have to register on the site and use the shopping cart system but when you get to the end you can use this coupon: getonefree and your order is doubled for free.

They are a new company but I ordered just 60 last week on monday and I got them on wednesday so they seem quick enough.

  • The strength of these fish oil capsules is the same as those provided by ZIPVIT Zipvit charge £9.75 for 360 2.7p per capsule.
    Fishoils4u Omega-3 120 Capsules3 months supply of Omega-3 capsules with free postage & packing £9.98

Zipvit 360 capsules same size and amount of EPA/DHA 360 for £9.75

The cheapest full price of Fishoils4u is 6.24p per capsule so if you buy one/get one free this comes down to 3.12p which is still more than you can get them for from Zipvit.
Zipvit service is usually fairly prompt. If you want you can use their freephone number 0800 0282875. Postage is £1 but free if the order is over £16.95

Who buys 360 in one go! Thats a but load of tablets, ZipVit are charging £2.95 for 90 which is 4.4p per cap (including postage), fishoils4u are charging 4.2p for the same caps and free postage with the voucher code and you get 120. Its swings and roundabouts really, I've used fishoils4u I think they're good, there no more expensive than zipvit and I haven't used zipvit. So I think I'll stick with what I know, it isn't costing me any more!

  • Most of the research done on omega 3s is done using at least 1g of omega daily. To get 1g of omega you need to be taking 3 or 4 1000g fish oil capsules as the omega 3 part is the sum of EPA+DHA for this type of fish oil capsule you get 180+120=300mg of omega so you need 3 to get .9g or 4 gets you 1.2g of actual omega.

If you were wanting to use them for depression then the research suggest 2-3g daily is effective that means taking 7 to 10 capsules daily. So you see why those folk who can't stand Zipvit's Omega juice, which enables you to get 3g of omega with 10ml,(2 tsp) would easily need to buy their omega 3 at the best bulk price possible.

If you think of air pressure in a tyre you may get the idea. If the tyre is flat putting in a couple of puffs of air ain't going to make a scrap of difference. You'll still ruin your rims if you drive anywhere, to save the wheel from further damage you have to put in sufficient to make a real difference and that means trying to get it somewhere near the full amount.

The ideal amount of oily fish is 4 portions a week for a bloke with no existing health issues, this gives you abount 9g of OMEGA3's. The average person consumes one quarter of a portion every week or one portion every 4 weeks.

So messing around with one capsule a day is probably a waste of effort unless you are also eating oily fish regularly and are just using the capsules as a top up.

  • so..It's perfectly ok to take 3 or 4 a day, Ted?
I mean sometimes I see a Vitamin E addition, not sure whether thats a natural ingredient of fish oil or whether its an added perservative that would start to be a negative effect if taken in too much quantity?
I started off with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Taking 4 1000mg (1g) tablets a day seems excessive especially when there is no established (as in confirmed by the GMC) RDA for Omega-3

  • I agree with what Ted says, having done a lot of reading on the subject. There is no recommended daily amount, it's true, but neither is there any evidence that taking quite large amounts is harmful. You'll suffer from digestive problems if you're body can't handle it!

Some high quality fish-oil capsules contain much higher concentrations of Omega 3. We take Morepa and it contains 75% Omega 3. Therefore you need fewer capsules to get the therapeutic effect.

Actually, thinking about this further, it does depend what you are taking it for. If for example you have mild arthritis, like me, then one low-dose capsule a day is easily enough to ward off the symptoms. On the other hand if you are taking it to treat depression you will probably need a higher dose for it to be effective.
  • As we aren't allowed to give medical advice on this forum, we are limited to providing information and it then is up to the reader what they make of it.

In a previous thread I made it clear that I take 3g of OMEGA 3 (which as you should by now realise isn't the same as 3 X 1000mg fish oil capsules) daily. I have a mental health condition and an autoimmune condition neither of which I wish to progress. I also take 4000iu of Vitamin D during the Autumn/Winter and Spring because I am aware that for my cells to absorb omega this can only be done in the presence of vitamin d, so a shortage of vitamin d leads to a deficiency of omega. 4000iu is the amount of vitamin D you use daily. You will, if you have been outside in the summer have a store of vitamin D but after about 6 weeks this becomes diminished and we start having colds/flu type conditions. Providing you don't take more than 10000iu daily over a long period (no one should as it's pointless taking vitamin d when the sun is shining strongly enough to get it for free) there is no danger of toxicity. A 2yr old boy received a total of 2,400,000 IU over 4 days and made a complete recovery. Duration of free vitamin d synsthesis can be found here
You can hear one of the world's top vitamin D scientists talking about the appropriate level of vitamin d High Bandwidth Version here

Those who have been following these matters will have seen recently how the Food Standards Agency was forced by big business to cave in on their Salt intake regulations. Ideally, for perfect health a daily limit of 1.5g of sodium will reduce adverse health consequences to a minimum. The FSA wanted a daily limit of 3g daily but because of pressure from big business agreed as 6g daily as a target. The figures which we end up with aren't those which are ideal for health but which are politically achievable. If you would rather trust Tesco's than your own common sense that is your perogative but I would suggest you buy a digital kitchen scale. Then read how much salt your ready meal contains, then put that amount of salt on the digital scale and ask yourself if you consider that a sensible amount of salt to put on one portion. You may well be shocked if not horrified by the thought of knowingly eating that much salt in one meal. Then weigh out 1.5g and see if that is not a more sensible amount for daily consumption.

If you don't want to get MS or any other autoimmune condition then the supplement list here is probably based on the best, most recent scientific evidence available. The other links on that site will provide the scientific basis for those recommendations.
