Laptop V Netbook?

I have two teenage children and was considering buying them a laptop each for Christmas.
They would be using them for music, surfing and homework mainly. My ds is a bit of a brand snob as is wanting a Sony Viao but my dd is considering a netbook.
I have looked at the netbooks and quite like the look of the Samsung one due for release next week.
Can anyone advise me please? Will a netbook do all dd would like to do or have any other suggestions?

I like the netbooks, but they are not as powerful as a laptops, thats why most of them run on linux or windows xp op as they are not powerful enough to run vista.
The netbooks are more mobile, but they also dont have a optical drive, so theres no way of installing software from cd's playing music, dvd's or burning music and dvds.
If was you i would get them both laptops, the only advantage with a netbook is the mobility, and to be honest i wouldnt want my kids wondering roung with 300 pounds worth of netbook on the streets.
theres load of good cheap laptops out there, ive got a acer aspire and they are cheap and i havent had a problem with mine touch wood.
Aldi have got some cracking laptps coming in and they are very powerful the specs are amazing, infact they are as good a desktop, theyve even got a buit in tv tuner for freeview.
these are top laptops for just over 500 pound
