Setting up a NAS box

I'm trying to set up a NAS box on a rel's network. I bought the £39.99 enclosure from maplin and put an old hard disk in it and can see it fine when in direct connect, I then changed the IP address over to a static IP so it can be seen on my network and can access the web configuration page of the drive fine.
The only problem is that when I try to type in the suggested name for the drive (i.e. //storage), the PC sends it to a web page and searches for related pages online. I've tried it with a few different names and they all do the same thing. Anyone got any suggestions on how to access my folders?
I'm running XP on this machine and Vista on a laptop and can't seem to get anywhere.
Thanks for any pointers

Hi,does it work if you put \\192.168.x.x (ie whatever the ip address is)?
if so, put
192.168.x.x storage
into c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Thanks for the reply. I've assigned it a static IP of 192.168.1.38 and it's got a factory default hostname of storage-5d9d. I can reach the config page in firefox and have checked that there are folders in both the public and private spaces on the box.
I tried putting this one in the hosts file and it didn't work (Windows cannot find "\\storage-5d9d\". Check the spelling and try again, or try searching...
I then tried to change the hostname to 'storage' on the drive and renamed the hosts file accordingly and still no luck. Have you any other thoughts?

Thanks for that, I did as you suggest and now when I put http:\\storage\ in an address bar it maps to the config page.if http://192.168.1.38 works
then
192.168.1.38 storage
into hosts and
http://storage should work
or are you talking about mapping to a share, in which case you need to setup the sharing folder and rights under smb server
also disable the dhcp server if you haven't already
I suspect that I want to do the smb server thingy but am not sure how:
1 - Do I disable the DHCP server on the NAS box? (Just tried and can't see a difference).
2 - I've added some folders to the public space on the NAS config page (no password that I know of) and still can't see them.
Can you give me some pointers on how to get this connected?
