Electric Fire Smells of Gas

We have a Baxi Bermuda LFE3 Super electric fire and when I have turned it on it really smells of gas so much that I have had to turn it off. It hasnt ben on since last year so I left it ten mins to see if it was just because of that but the smel is quite strong and seems to be making me a bit wheezy!!

Does anyone know whether this is common with a rarely used fire or whether we may need to have it looked at?

Many thanks in advance.

using an electric fire after a long time dormant, will cause a funny smell from the dust burning, on the elements. it usually goes after a while.
probably just needs a good clean inside.

ive no idea what the "gas" smell is?

Stupid question - but are you sure it's an electric fire? I thought Baxi Bermuda's were fires that were used with back boilers?I wasn't aware they made electric fires.

looking at the model number again, i think youre right.
its a gas fire/back boiler and not an electric fire!

turn it off and get it serviced!
    (or read the user manual).

We used to have a Baxi Bermuda fire which had orange electric bulbs in it, which could be switched on to give a glow, even if the gas fire wasn't on. I'm wondering if this is what has maybe confused lucyabc?

Jackie, yes that is exactly what it is sorry and yes we do have a back boiler!! I say it smells of gas but it could just be dust burning off and we have lived here four years and not had it serviced so probably time really. It is turned off and Ive put the heating on instead.
Thanks for your advice guys x

You've done the right thing. We didn't have our one serviced for the first 7 years! When we did, we were told it was dangerous. We got it fixed and serviced annually after that. Saying that, even though it was serviced regularly, it was rarely used, and it did smell on the rare occasions we did use it.
