Windows Movie Maker

Can someone explain to me the following, I just imported a wmv file into movie maker it was showing as 15.4mb,so I trimmed shaky bits at start and finish about 15-20 seconds worth, but when I publish the finished clip to my hard drive it was showing as having a volume of 22mb.
Am I doing something wrong? or is it a technical reason for this anomaly.
Finally last question can anyone recommend alternative video editing software preferably free.
Thanks for reading.

it may be saving the file as best quality for your PC. you could try reducing the quality / resolution. The original clip resolution may be lower than your PC standard which will cause WMM to save it as a higher "quality". (even if it doesnt look higher quality).

Can't think of any other video editing software for free but WMM is pretty good for basic stuff. Once I started making movies that were too big for WMM I went out and bought Pinnacle Studio 10
Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig
