Direct Debit Guarantee - Lies!
Comments

In reality, there are very few people who have issues with DD s.
I feel a poll comming on
I've been refused immediate reimbursement twice and had to sort it out myself with the organisations who screwed up.
The bad news is it took about ten days and loads of 0845 phone calls.
The good news is that I think I am becoming fluent in at least four foreign languages."It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

Try it. See what happens.
I say this having closed the accounts of two people who tried this on me when I worked in branch. What would William Shatner do?0 -

No doubt they are quite happily banking elsewhere now...
Can I ask you why it is reasonable for your bank to charge similar fees for minor infringements of the terms and conditions of an account, yet blatantly ignoring the terms of the direct debit guarantee is perfectly acceptable?0 -

Oddly enough, the only people who try that sort of thing are the ones who will never be happily banking anywhere.
As for why we don't give you back your money the very second you appear in the bank, it's because we a) have a department that specifically deals with it (in Barclays, it's the AUDDIS and Indemnities Team in Southampton), which ensures a clear and effective process is followed each time with no potential for error and b) over 90% of claims raised are refunded that same day or within 24 hours.
At least in Barclays, we refund you from our own pocket and then claim the funds back from the the originator, but in order to do it effectively for a group as large as ours, we have a central team to deal with it. So you may have to wait a few hours. Not going to apologise for that. And whilst I have never called up the BACS company myself, they apparently think 24 hours is pretty reasonable too.
Oh, and the Banking Code is a voluntary code of conduct and all the banks help in writing it. So I'm sure we'll remember to change it next time. What would William Shatner do?0 -

It doesn't.
I read the small print in all my contracts (I actually keep my paperwork) and writing to the company as per the contract terms to cancel the DD and cancelling the DD via your bank does not stop some companies from setting up the direct debit a few months later.
Basically these companies are taking money out of my bank account for a service they are not providing.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

The Banking Code might be voluntary, but honouring the Direct Debit Guarantee is actually a contractual obligation. It seems the FOS thinks that banks are often at fault, see http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/27/27-directdebit-guarantee.htm0 -

You have the guarantee but no it has to be done immediately - well if you go into your branch at 9.30 you might well have the funds back in your account by the close of business but you won't if you go in at 3.30.
If only you were all as quick to bring your accounts back to order when going overdrawn or over your limits!
I find the attitude of most bank employees that post on here, equally unbelievable to be honest.
It is evident that they are both arrogant and evasive, they appear to defend the somewhat dodgy actions of their employers to the hilt, discarding any valid comments from customers with contempt.0 -
I demanded a FULL and immediate from Abbey after AMEX cocked up with something similar.
After 2 days of them saying it will take 48 WORKING HOURS I called BACS and they confirmed that Abbey MUST refund the money otherwise they were in breach of the DD Guarantee. I called them for the 5th(ish) time and they refunded the money there and then. I also got £50 for my trouble from Abbey and then £60(ish) from AMEX!0 -
4 years ago I had a car on a 3 year hire purchase with an optional final payment, during the final year I got a new job with a company car so handed the car back at the end of the 3 years, to find the company still took the final payment of £3500 out of my HSBC account leaving us massively overdrawn. I only discovered this a couple of days after this had happened when I tried to get money from the cash point and was refused, I was away with work at the time.
HSBC were useless, telling me it was Renaults fault and they wouldn't refund the money, it would have to come from Renault. Renault were immediately apologetic and were arranging to have the money returned to me but it would take a few days, they said the bank should refund it straight away and claim it back from Renault.
I spent a fraught 8 hours on and off the phone to the HSBC who handled the whole mess appallingly, I couldn't understand how they could allow the DD in the first place leaving us £2500 overdrawn (no overdraft on this account either!)
Renault were fantastic, they even sent me a hamper and a cheque to cover the phone calls and time wasted on this as a way of apology, I got nothing from HSBC, except a guarantee I wouldn't be charged for being overdrawn but they still told me they would in the meantime not honour any other DD's or cheques I had written as I was so overdrawn, my mortgage was due out that day!, so my dad had to transfer his money into my account to prevent this happening, HSBC refunded my money 2 days later so I could pay my dad back.
The stress of all this was unbelieveable, esp when I was away with work and could not get access to any money, I think I had about 20p in my purse!, the HSBC should be ashamed of themselvesAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -
you must have given Reanault permission to take the payment in the original paperwork at the beginning of the term. It is often a difficult call to make wether to pay or not. If they pay, your damned, if you dont your damned.
Was the payment a dd?0
