Sure he has plugged both power connectors??

Top right of this picture is a small white square 4-pin connector, ensure this is connected. The old mainboard may not have had one.

Go back to basics, just leave the CPU and one stick of RAM installed (Use the slot closest to the CPU).

Pull out everything else, no drives at all, no usb headers, nothing.

Boot it up and see if you can get into BIOS. If not, swap the RAM sticks (still using the one closest the CPU). I don't suspect the ram though, if it wasn't working/fitted the mainboard would beep (assuming the pc speaker has been connected properly)

check for a jumper near the CMOS battery, ensure it isn't shorting the reset pins (I've had loads with the pins shorted as default when new,)

okay mate, will have a go tommorrow, first ill take it all out and make sure he put spacers etc in correctly then begin as you said and try each bit on its own and see if i can eliminate some things. You know the speaker thing where you get the beeps, do these differ? as in set ups ive done before some have been a small thin wire with a circle ear phone type thing attached with a 4 pin connector on the end, he has one no where to be seen, ive asked if he got one with the mobo or out and he said nope.

    Do some differ?

The speaker is part of the case, not the mainboard. Not sure about your description of ear phone thing but it is a thin flat circle (usually but can differ).

You are correct there is normally a 4-pin connector, only the outer ones are used (normally black and red). The two inner connectors are empty.

It is normal for the speaker connector to be separate from the rest of the case connectors (PWR, RST, HDD LED, PWR LED etc) but likely that the mainboard connector for it is in the same place as the rest.

    EDIT
Heres a picture of an internal speaker but not a flat one as I described above but you can see the black and red wires

sometimes you can get the very small internal speakers which have wires attached and plug into the motherboard - they are about the size of a thumbnail and shaped like a small squat cyliner. they are only really there to provide a "beep" at startup and the odd occasion when you get an error message displayed
Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig
