I am planning on an upgrade .
The present 2 choices I have in mind are
1) Medion Akoya P6612 http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/58_7660.htm
or
2) Dell XPS m1530 http://stuff.tv/Review/Dell-XPS-M1530/
I would get the dell from the outlet shop ,so looking to spend about as much as the Akoya .
I think it comes down to Good Looks (XPS) to processor speed Akoya ..
I have wireless N at home ,But I think Both machines have that .
Any input much appreciated.

I normally wouldnt reccomend Dell computers to anyone as they have a habit of buying the components from the cheapest bidder, which usually means cheap and unreliable machines. However in recent years they seem to have changed their way of building machines and can now offer good value for money with pretty much top quality components, although the saying is still true - You get what you pay for.
As a computer engineer I have seen loads of Medion PC's and Laptops recently suffering from all manner of faults, be it burnt out components, inferior build quality or extremeley hard to find drivers (they use other hardware, tweak it, rebrand it and create their own drivers for it.)
On the face of it I'd say to go with the Dell but would suggest if at all possible to shop around a bit more, or see if you or someone else can build you a machine for the same kind of price. I've recently been knocking out Dual core machines with pretty good specs for my customers for less than £250
Hope this helps0 -
suppose im biased, but after alot of deliberating myself between a hp dv5 and the dell xps 1530, i went for the latter, and am now eagerly awaiting my lappy.
have to say, i have never had any problems with multiple purchases of dell computers over the years.:j0 -
speaking from my own experience I have had 3 medion pc's all from Aldi. haven't had one problem with any of them. 2 still running well after 4 years. the other I stripped for spares, I suppose like anything it's luck of the draw like tvs or cars0

Looks like it's the XPS then .
Cheers for the replies ....Off to go and find a few more generous bookies

...but I've been getting Medion PCs from Aldi for the last few years.
I've had computers since the Sinclair days, my first PC was bought too long ago to remember - 17 MB hard drive - I was the MAN with that whopper! It also boasted a 5 1/4 floppy and a new fangled 3.5 floopy too.
Now, umpteen years later, I upgrade my PC every three years, courtesy of Aldi now, passing my old PC to the wife and hers off somewhere. The Medion PCs all have a 3 year warranty and are repaired at home for free - so the mass of Medion PCs that 4evared above has been repairing are probably all over 3 years old - or someone is not bothering to read their garantees very well.
The only defect I've had in 4 years is a duff (Panasonic) DVD drive that declined to recognise new media (that I promptly popped into the wife's network PC to burn the stuff off). They sent someone round to changed the drive even though I said mail it to me and I can slap it into the box in a couple of minutes - I have carried out loads of hardware upgrades over the years.
Somewhere down the line, I did have a Dell system too. The Dell badged monitor, a 21" CRT with Trinitron tube is still in front of me (Die, you swine, die so I can buy a big LCD). Alongside are the Altec Lansing speakers with a big woofer below that were also part of the Dell system. The Dell PC tower went to PC heaven a long time ago (actually, it went for recycling after I took the good bits out).
I buy Medion PCs from Aldi because I find them good value for money and they all come with a first rate Medion/Aldi 3 year warranty with home repair. Our PCs are used every day - mine is usually left on continuously for days at a time.
Personally, I like replacing just the tower unit as it's all I ever want to upgrade. They come with wireless keyboards so I'm begining to get a collection of them stacking up now (I prefer a bent Microsoft keyboard for typing).
The way I look at it is that a company has to be pretty sure of the hardware it is pushing out to provide that level of assurance and warranty.
In the end, it's your choice/gamble. I've gone with Medion and got good use out of the two we have here...

But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

Yes, Medions are fantastic Generally.
In fact, I'm using an AKOYA right now
Brilliant laptop, brillinat computer.
They use decent components, as opposed to Dell that use cheap inferior components.0 -

Do you know many laptop builders?

Oh - remember that Aldi has a 3 Year Guarantee, the most crucial thing when buying a laptop
