The pain of switching

Another thing that got me wondering. When you transfer via online banking, what happens if you get the account no (an invalid one for example) or sort code wrong? How do you ever trace the lost transfer?
I only ask as Coventry BS ask you to use the LAST 8 digits of your account no when internet banking (not the first) and making a first payment I didn't know whether to use my own name in the Barclays 'who to pay' box or Coventry BS followed by sort code and account no. I thought there was a lot of opportunity for mistakes and some large amounts involved!
As Geoffo says it will bounce. I phoned Coventry earlier about name in box as different banks seem to have different ideas. Coventry say it doesn't matter. I prefer to put my name as payee and the bank. coventry. as the reference.0 -
If these organisations were really interested in providing decent customer service they would put their heads together and develop consistent, efficient, safe methods of opening and closing accounts and switching money. They had to be dragged kicking and screaming into improving the speed of the electronic transfer mechanism, and the business of switching ISA's is still a joke. As it is, all the f**ting and faffing about that has to take place with most of them is at best irksome, and at worst enraging.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

"So we trundled up a big hill to Barclays only to be told that an electronic transfer wasn't possible to a web account".
They lied.
If the receiving account has an account number and sort code they can do this.0 -
I have found that if you put "sort code ** ** **" into google it will usually find you the name and address of the bank.0

On the enclosed 50 Plus eSave leaflet it reads...
If you haven't received a letter asking you to choose your password and memorable words within two weeks of opening your account, please let us know by calling 0845*******
Does anyone know just how long this next process takes?
Has anyone gone through this process recently?
I want to transfer quite a large amount but am apprehensive about doing so, as I won't be able to login and check the money has gone through ok.0 -

In the same position as you. Have just tried transferring £10 and if it doesn't bounce it has gone through is the logic. Coventry said the next letter with log in details should be about 4-5 days. I understand your concern about not seeing the money arrive for a large sum but my £10 transfer at least enabled me to set up the transfer details on my linked account.0 -

Thank you, I'll give £10.00 a try. As you say, at least the debit details will be set up in readyiness.0 -
Doh to me
Mind you, I don't really like the idea of transferring money, if I don't know when I'll be able to login and see that it transferred successfully.
Nor did I...BUT I had a lot of cash withdrawn from ING doing nothing in my Barclays current account' so I transferred 10K to my new Coventry account without having the security details to check it went through. This started to worry me, especially with the stupid 'omit first digit' account number so I rang them. The Coventry man was very obliging and asked other security questions and then asked me to confirm the amount electronically transferred. He assured me that this had gone through correctly...sigh......

........also the Coventry agent said that security details get piority in setting up and if not received back in 4-5 days to ring them and ask them to cancel those details and set up new ones.

In my letter, it states that there will not be any further communication re security details.
So I only have the password and three memorable words I filled in and sent back to them. It says to wait 3/4 days for them to be working.
When I went to have a look at the website login today, it asks for 'WEB ID' and I have no idea what that would be.
I did do a £10.00 one day and then £10,000.00 the next. Not going to transfer any more though, until I can login and check my account.0
