Awful smeeling rug ....Help!!

We have a large rug in our living room which is a couple of years old.
Over the years things have got spilt as happens but recently it has developed an awful odour in one area.
Could be any number of things that have been spilt from wine, tea guinness to cereal and milk.
We have tried everything from deodourising products to rinsing totally with the housepipe to no avail.
We even called a proffesional carpet cleaner out who said he wouldnt bother wasting the £30 he would charge as he couldnt guarantee the smell going.
It cost us over £100 from Next so you can understand us not wanting to just bin it.
Anyone any ideas on how to get rid of the smell?
Material is 100% polypropylene (i think)
