I am trying to get a new laptop with Windows XP, I don't want to change to Vista.
A lot of the ones available have Celeron 2.13Ghz processor. I have no experience of Celeron, have always had Pentium.
Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on Celeron?

I'd always avoid Celeron in favour of better chips.
Try and get a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.
If you are looking at Dells, ring them up and they will be able to supply XP, and a lot of other companies still will too.0 -
Cleron's are fine as long as you don't want to play any hi-spec games or do video editing.
Why don't you want to change to Vista? It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -

Thanks for your thoughts.
I am not too keen on Dell Laptops, I know a few people with them and I don't like all the silver keyboards and surround as I have to be careful with things that reflect, all health related, kinda complicated.0 -

Why don't you want to change to Vista?
Games and videos are not something I use.
I would just prefer to stick with XP.0 -
You'll be Ok with a celeron then. Look at prices though, if a dual core is a few quid more expensive then go with that.
I'd also think carefully about sticking with XP. There is nothing wrong with Vista, despite what the doom mongers will have you believe. It's as easy if not easier to use than XP once you get used to it.
Also consider that most XP machines are going to be either old stock that didn't shift or machines that are coming to end of life. You'll find that going with Vista will give you a better spec and a more stable system and also a better looking laptopIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -

Thanks for the tips.
The price difference bewteen XP with Celeron and XP with Core Duo seems quite steep. Having said that there don't seem to be too many XP ones with Core Duo around, maybe that is why the price difference is so steep? I don't remember the price difference between Celeron and Pentium ever being so big, I was always able to go for the Pentium as the price difference wasn't much.0 -
dabs have 50 odd laptops with either xp home or pro0

remember celeron was designed for desktops, centrino for laptops.0

Microsoft Licensing currently allows you to downgrade a vista OS to XP (you'd have to check on the microsoft website for which versions). So you are not nesscessarily tied to older hardware. I believe that they intend to withdraw this as an option in the not to distant future.
I think XP has matured into a stable OS. Vista still has a few teething issues and if you've got any older printer/peripherals you may struggle for vista drivers.
If you are going to be out and about with the laptop look for the 'mobile' chip versions - usually designated by an 'M' in the processor name.
In a sense the celeron is the 'budget' range of chips, I believe the centrino range of chips just provided improved wireless comms over other chips?
Pentium and the core series of chips come in both desktop and mobile varieties. The desktop chips tend to run hotter and use more power, not really an issue if you aren't away from your desk.0
