MP3 player memory only half what it should be

Hopefully you can help me.
I have a 1GB mp3 player which seemed to be working fine. I put music o a couple of days ago but track 19 in each folder was corrupted and also there was some unreadable file in each folder which name began 'USB' with some numbers/letters after it.
I could not get these files removed by selecting delete but eventually managed somehow, not quite sure what I did. The problem is that the memory is now at half capacity even when I have no music on it.
Anybody had any experience of this?
I would be grateful for any suggestions on what steps to take to rectify this problem.
Cheers.

Connect to PC and then go to My Computer find the drive right click
and choose format "Warning" this will delete any files on player.0 -
sometimes its a firmware corruption, mine used to do it all the time until i used the firmware from a later version
theres normally instructions on how to do this in the book and the files are on the little disk.you have to copy the first one over, let it install then reboot then format and then do the second if i remember rightly
mine also came with a virus installed as it happens !!Ex forum ambassador
