At 17 you are unlikely to understand the value of money. As much as you think you do, you won't. I don't want to sound harsh like some of the others as really its only your age and experience which makes you think £20 a week is unfair.
When you have your own children you will understand. My kids school dinners alone come to nearly that. The food you eat will definately cost your parents more than that.
Add up the cost of washing, electric/gas/council tax/phone etc.
I'm sure at 17 you want a car. I remember the feeling. But hey ho, lesson number 1 of being an adult is that you often will not get what you want.
Oh and lastly, many people bring kids up on less money than you earn in a week.0 -
At 17 YOU are old enough to value money. My daughter is 13 and she knows. For goodness sakes, he is one year away from being an adult
My kids were taught the value of money as soon as they were getting pocket money

The funny thing is that when siblings pay a lot of money from a low wage, and
parents keep banging on about "why dont you move out" well thats fine if there
was any money left over from paying Mum and Dad to save for a deposit.0 -
Johanne - that's and incredibly helpful and wise post.........a very big round of applause to you! (haven't learned how to do smileys yet)0

God only £20 you should count yourself lucky!!!!
I was on a YTS in 1985 and earned £25.25 a week, of that my parents took £15 rent out of the other £10.25 I had to pay my bus fare to work which was £5 and live of the remainder!!!!!!!!!I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

It makes me worry and wonder why people in general have so much debt. Because teens and adults a like have no idea about the value of money.
As all they see is a piece of plastic and the figures on a cc statement are worthless. If they saw the thousands they owe in loans on cc's etc in real money they might just change their minds. And realise it is real. And they are stealing from their future.
I am sure some of us oldies (I am 33 by the way)where just the same when we where that age. Maybe not as I don't seem to recall the orgy that is called the consumer society back then.
No one had mobile phones, £100 trainers unless they actually did the training. When I was 17. We all had the same like or lump. And none of these webites like boys toys etc existed. People did have left over money but it was not wasted on must have gadets like Ipods.
To me there are very few people who actually really get full use of an Ipod that cost hundreds of pounds. Alll it is the Sony walkman of the day. People have stereos at home and in there cars. So to me unless you do a travelling, either in planes, trains or spend a lot of time in hotel rooms. Please tell me why. Oh yes because it is fun gadet that I will use exactly 10 time and then shove in a drawer.
But that is the way of humans. It just keeps consuming because it knows no better. And is so silly would buy Dog poo if it was wrapped in bow for a £100. Because it is fashion statement of the next must have.
If you want to buy it then my website address is https://www.buydogpoo.com and I will even put it in a very pretty box for too. Total cost including p+p £150 :snow_laug

Hi there.
As an ex-debt free wannabe, since being in debt, I have only just learnt the value of money!!
I used to save my pocket money, and used to understand the value of money, but something changed and I racked up £19,000 of debt!!! Now that has been paid off, I have learnt SO many valuable lessons that I am grateful for.
I used to begrudge paying my parents £20 a week, how cool would that be now? To pay £20 a week and get all of your meals cooked for you, all your washing done? I wouldnt give up my independence for the world now, but pay nearer £100 a week for it...

:rotfl: MY mum has reminded me that my dad suggested I pay him rent when I was a teenager.
Apparently, I said, in a hurt voice: "But this is my HOME. You can't charge me to live here."
:rotfl:
But I wasn't working at the time, I was studying. So he was out of order. And no, I didn't give him any rent, I moved out at 19.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
