  • Hi superscaper
Sorry but IE we had but each time as it upgrades itself it brought the virus trogen horse with it and we kept having to take it in , so have never had any trouble with the computer since the shop put on Firefox till now .

That doesn't sound right to me in itself. What security do you use? (also I mentioned Opera as well, have you tried that?).

IE6 is pretty awful I suppose, but you are using an OS that's no longer supported so it may be worth thinking of upgrading, especially since you can't even get Firefox security updates.

  • Hi
After speaking to my son IE and Norton did not understand each other ( a long time a go ) from the computer shop man , so as firefox have its own security we stick to that and only now have a problem that I can't get a full page of choice just the banner every thing else is the same . Opera my son says is another search engine and may disrupt our system as you can tell I don't know a lot about the working of them but with me messing with it I now have an email checker in the corner that was not there before so gods know what I touched lol
also we don't have any searches saved in the drop down now

Opera is another browser and certainly wouldn't mess up anything. I've currently got IE7, Firefox and Opera installed and sometimes have them all open at the same time. I'm rather concerned you make no mention of currently having either an antivirus or a firewall, both of which are an absolutely necessity and you could very well have an infected PC. Firefox will do absolutely nothing if you don't have a firewall and its' own security is not a replacement to having a firewall and antivirus. You may need to find older versions that will work with 98 but not having a firewall leaves your pc open to attack as soon as you're connected to the internet whether or not you're even doing anything. At this point we can't say for certain that you don't have viruses, keyloggers etc so first thing is to get a firewall and antivirus installed and then start scanning and cleaning your system.

What about firewall? Is the Norton Antivirus up to date (aside from being a particularly derided product on these boards)?

    Hi
right as my son is out I took a chance and downloaded opera and got choice up so thank you , but the message came up saying --Systems libray msimg32.dll is missing or too old so only certain transprancy affect will be slow .
obtaining the libray from windows me installation and placing it in your windows system directory will fix it .

But as we are on 98se can't do that so does this mean the computer will be slow .

we have a new flat screen ( viewsonic ) and a keyboard so only have to upgrade the computer but not sure what to or the best way to go about it , I want it for the net and my son wants to play games on line but this is too old for some newer games .
  • Hi superscaper
Just to say thank you very much for taking the time to help I am getting on well with Opera :T :T
