Ryannair rip-off on baggage

Apparently Ryannair is collecting £20 million per year in excess baggage charges, partly because passengers are not allowed to pool their baggage allowances.

Perhaps Easyjet offers better value after all?

(David -- who has never flown on either of these airlines.)

The article actually says "the airline allows those who book as groups to "share" their baggage, but individuals are not allowed the same concession."

So you can pool your allowance with the people you booked with, but not the stranger with only hand luggage next in the queue. Seems fair to me, but then a 25KG luggage allowance (15KG checked and 10KG cabin) seems perfectly adequate.

I don't really see the problem with excess baggage charges, they're hardly a stealth tax, it's quite clear on your tickets how much luggage you're allowed to carry. A lot of people go overboard with the amount they take on holiday - I know, I've been fined 40 quid myself flying back from the Canary Islands.

People should really weigh their cases before they go. If we didn't have the charges then people would be throwing the kitchen sink in their case, and we'd all end up paying extra for them.

ryanair give the flights away at such low prices..i for one have no problem with them collecting a little on excess charges

and with 10kg hand luggage allowance and a bit of thought on the matter, it really is no great deal

it makes you wonder how long these next to nothing flights will go on for....enjoy them while you can

As I read the article, people (eg families) travelling together were not allowed to pool their baggage allowance but only organised tour groups.

Apart from that, the principle of charging for excess baggage is reasonable enough. I always weigh my luggage before setting off from the airport, but still on occasions I have had to leave high-weight low-value stuff at the airport rather than pay to take it across the world. But my flights are generally long-haul -- it hardly seems worth the bother of getting to the airport to get to anywhere that Ryanair flies!
  • We have only had a problem once and that was our own fault. We were over a combined 10KG spread amoungst 5 cases. We could easily absorbed this in hand luggage. Cost us £45
