Even if he was allowed to do up to 16 hours and still sign on, he wouldn't be entitled to anymore money because the amount he earns doing 15 hours is more than the government states you need to live on.

Thank you Boppy, this is yet another example of how JSA as a whole is flawed, all their leaflets state you can work up to 16hrs/week but even if being paid at minimum wage you are going to earn more than what you are entitled to and therefore actually get zero!
I wonder how many government ministers live on £60/week as that is what they state you can live on!

They won't be making a payment - to be entitled to JSA you have to be unemployed. If you think £1,000 a month isn't much - the JSA rate for a couple is about £90 a week.
The best way to work the system is to have about 10 kids. The whole system is based around the child free paying for other peoples children.

Yes I figured that!! I honestly don't know who decides £90/week is enough to live on, I suppose if you aren't paying mortgage etc you could survive but as you say I think the majority must be claiming DLA/IB aswell as everything else going.
It's also the fact that you actually get penalised for having worked during your life, if you haven't paid taxes you get more money??!

I know there really isn't a lot we can do but tighten our belts even more and hope he finds a job soon (interview this afternoon so fingers crossed!) doesn't stop me being mad though!

Have you put a claim in for HB/CTC ?

I would ring tax credits again and ask them to use your curent year earnings not last years. To increase your payment

I didn't say we were being penalised, I said the system is flawed as the same amount is given to every person regardless of the circumstance. It is also flawed as the have yet to make a payment after 2 months, it is aswell we aren't relying on it to feed our child!

Also I don't know what your circumstances are as you have neglected to say but how many people do you know who are 1st time home owners, parents paying for nursery and on ocassion child care (so we can work!) who can survive on just over £1000/month?? I obviously havent been round this site long enough to know all the tricks of the trade!!

I`m a little bemused as in you first post you said he`d had a reasonable redundancy payment, and now he`s been offered a p/time job that pays more than JSA and yet you still seem unhappy??

Yes resonable redundancy payment equal to approx 3 months pay so now about a months worth left, a part time job that is equal to less than half of what he previously earned, our outgoings are based on what we both brought in and left us enough to live on so half his income doesn't make the books balance!! I have explained that my issues are more to do with the false information provided by SS, the fact that everyone is entitled to the same JSA regardless of situation and the fact that they haven't actually made ANY payment as yet!! What more can I say? Have you actually been in this position that you feel so able to comment?!

JSA is not here to make the books balance, it is a temporary benefit for those seeking work. So you think you/your husband should be entitled to more based on what exactly ? Anyway, good luck in getting things sorted, hopefully he will get something f/t soon and you will get back on top of things, in the meantime pull in those belts!

The amount payable to single people isn't topped up with tax credits though-so the system isn't quite as you are seeing it. Since being out of work I have had to live on far less than you whilst supporting 3 children-1 at Uni-and pay half my £680 per month mortgage,so it can be done. By doing the grocery challenge I have halved my grocery shopping bill.
