Assuming your washers are the old fashioned rubber type - Have you tried a "Full Stop Washer and Seat"?
We've used just the seat washer with a conventional washer on both old (c1920) and modern taps and they've lasted longer than any other washer repair. If you do use these warm the seat washers before fitting to help it seat better.
They are a bit hard to find ( B and Q Warehouse stores used to stock them) but worth the effort.0 -

Sounds like a good idea. I had a leaking tap and the plumber suggested re-seating rather than replacing it. I went along with that. He did the re-seating very diligently with the correct tools but the damn thing was leaking again within a week. I had the tap replaced.
I now feel that re-seating is very 'hit and miss' and would go for the ''Full Stop Washer and Seat' in future. They seem to be readily available online.
