Hi
I've just left my jb and am claiming IS, I only put in my claim on Monday so will be waiting for that to come through.
I cancelled my WTC and phoned today to be told my payments will be going down to £33 a week!
Now I thought it was £50 for one child, this is almost £20 less which means that I'll be struggling severely after paying my bills.
Is there any way I can get this increased to the amount I thought I would get?
I'm getting really worried now about how I'm going to cope.

If you have an overpayment it will be recovered from your CTC.
If your claim for IS goes through you should tell TCO immediately. Once you have notified them you are on IS they will stop the recovery and you will see your CTC go back up again.
However, if you have an in-year overpayment it works a bit different as they automatically adjust your award and dont take it back week by week like overpayments from previous years.
I think you can request additional payments (cant remember the exact guidance off the top of my head). But if you receive additional payments they will have to recover the overpayment plus the additional payments at a later date.
First thing to do anyway is to get IS sorted then call TCO to let them know.
From this you can see how much your payments have changed to.0 -
I was the same as you in your shoe. I told tax credits to cancel my working tax credit cos I lost my job. They reduced my weekly CTC from £50 to £34 a week for 1 child. They told me it because of my working tax credit was stopped and overpayment by a little £96 the different on child tax credit between October 2008 and April 2009 before end of tax year.
Once you claim Income Support then your Child Tax Credit will go back up to £50 a week. I know it sound stupid but that how tax is worked out.
I had no ideas of how it worked it out.
My Income Support had send me a letter to say I am not entitled to Income Support because they got working tax credit on their system check a payment to myself £116 a week until November 11th (a run up of 4 weeks of WTC) and they ask me to reclaim the income support again on the November 12th once the WTC is cleared out !
What a stupid. I don't get £116 a week as I only get one off payment of WTC two days ago to my bank of £204 !!!0 -
Thanks for that, hopefully IS wont take ages, £34 a week to live off is nothing!:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0

Beware of IS will automatically checking your tax credits on their system (if WTC paid u 4 weeks runup) you won't getting any IS until WTC had been cleared out. Mine is November 11th to clear out WTC (4 weeks runup)
I do agreed with you £34 a week on child tax credit nothing to live on exspecially high foods and energy cost during winter ahead.0 -

This is at odds with JCP guidance, you shouldn't have to reclaim, IS should just put your claim back into payment from 12/11/08.

Just thought I'd update, phoned TCO after going to my work focused interview and they said it was already on their system that I was claiming IS.
SO after about 20 mins of trying to get a staright answer or a bit of help I logged on here and read the thread again, so I had to phone back and ask for additional payments, received a letter yesterday informing me I am entitled and my money will go up to £46 a week, £4 less than I should get but it will do.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0
