Hya , I ve had exctly the same problem with my cat until recently.. She was scratching doors windows , carpets bed, you name it !!

I read on the net that when they scratch you should make sue they cant see you, and make a loud noise..
I started by closing doors, and when she scratched, I would bang the back of the door.. Its taken me about 3 weeks, and she no longer scratches anything accept her scratching post ..:D

I was also feeding her on demand which was a right pain, now she has 3 meals at the same time of day, and no aount of crying or purring will get anymore.. Shes started to get the message for that too..:D

Have you tried leaving some toys where they can play out of earshot of you? If you could get a cat flap it would mean they can go and amuse themselves in the great outdoors (watch out for cold paws at silly o'clock though).
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Thanks everyone for all the replies. It's good to know that other people have the same problem, and my cat isn't just mental. I suppose I already knew that the best thing to do would be to shut them out of the room, but I feel so guilty when I am at work all day, to only see them for a few hours in the evening.

They have never really used the bed we bought for them, as they always sleep on our bed, so I should really get them something that they like to sleep on and put it in another room.

I like the idea of the automatic feeder too, I'll look into that and the sticky paws stuff.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

DOH - get the vet to show you how much/little 2 trim & then do it yrself whenever it's necessary.
  • Hi, fay144 did you ever manage to stop your kitten waking you? Mine does exactly the same and it's driving me crazy.................
 I have this theory that chocolate slows down the ageing process.... It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance?

I have had two male kittens for around 6 months, so they are around 9 months old. They are neutered, and both go outside for an hour or so a day (no cat flap, so let them out the door when we get home from work, and they usually come back after an hour or so).

My problem occurs at night. We decided to let them into the bedroom at night, as they were scratching at the bedroom door and hall carpet. Since then, one of the cats wakes me up every night by pawing at my face and arms and won't leave me alone. His claws are out when he is doing this, so it's quite hard to just ignore him. He is usually purring, so it doesn't seem like there is anything wrong with him.

I was originally getting up to feed them at 7am, but when he is scratching me at 5.30 I often get up and feed them then to get some peace - which is probably making the problem worse.

The only ways I have found to stop him, other than feeding him, have been:
    a) Wake his brother up, and then he annoys him instead, poor thing.
    b) Coax him into settling down and falling asleep on top of my head (odd cat). This is quite difficult to do, takes ages, and results in him purring directly into my ear.

I tried swapping sides of the bed with my husband, which worked for a day or two, but then the cat followed me round to the other side and it was back to normal. He never scratches my husband.

I'm not really sure what to do. I'd feel bad keeping them out of the bedroom when they have been used to sleeping there. He's a very affectionate cat, and I think he maybe just gets lonely when his brother is asleep.

    Any ideas?

    Fay
Don't let them into the bedroom. If they scratch at the door or carpet, open the door and either hiss at them or squirt them with a bit of water but don't let them in.
They get into behavioural habits easily and when you wake up and acknowledge him, he will do it all the more.
  • I'm having similar problems my kitten is sleeping next to me with her head out of the quilt and body along mine - fine until I want to turn over! then she prods me and walks round my head and gets along side me again!! Now she sleeps downstairs but has learnt how to open the door and so now I get her sneaking in about 5.30ish but she has food downstairs and i think shes getting cold because the heating goes off at 10pm - too soft by half!!
