I have finally gone bankrupt. I was really nervous and afraid about going to court and burst into tears when I saw the judge as it dawned on me how serious the situation is. The judge was very nice and said that bankruptcy doesn't have the stigma it used to and that bankruptcy was the best course of action for me. I am awaiting an appointment to have a face to face meeting with the OR and I am totally dreading this. I would like to thank everyone who writes on this forum because the wealth of information has helped me a lot.
I went to Barclays Bank to book an appointment for tomorrow to open a cash card account, but they said that they would do a credit check. I didn't have the bottle to tell the bank asssistant that I was bankrupt as there were too many people in the bank. Has anyone been credit checked by Barclays or the Co-op after Bankruptcy?

I think they always do a credit check, but if it's a basic account that's used for BRs there shouldn't be a problem. If there is, you could try phoning them and explaining that the account is for BR, or you could try the co-op instead. My OH has set up a co-op account and couldn't bring himself to tell them it was for BR either! CBx;)0

You can simply phone the co op and open one that way, I did tell the person at the other end I was going BR (which I did yesterday) she was fine. I know people have said they have then had to take proof into their local branch I was not asked to do this, and my card and paying in book arrived about a week later on from the phone call. It took about 24 mins well that what my phone statement says!
Hope everything goes well for you now.
I know the OR part is daunting, have mine to do as well, not sure if face to face or phone one, but I am just so relieved that the debts are no longer hanging round my neck and I hope you are as well.

Thank you for your replies. I went into Barclays this morning to open a cash account. The bank clerk put my information into the computer and after 50 minutes of sitting there, I was declined. I had told him straight away that I was bankrupt. In the end, he asked me to fill out a manual cash card form and he said I would have to wait 5 working days to see whether or not I'm accepted. I then decided to ring the Co-op. After 20 minutes, I was told that I was pre-accepted and that I was being referred. I should hear within 5-7 days. I only went bankrupt yesterday, but it feels weird not having a bank account.0

Oh sorry to hear this positivestep. Have you got someones account you can have money paid into, I have used my mums this month, it was all to close for comfort, BR Wednesday pay day today. I could not chance having no money to live on.
I hope you are accepted by one of these banks. I am sure some other people who have had this experience comes and tells you what happened to them.

Hi. I don't have anyone that I can trust to pay my wages into. I get paid in 3 weeks time, so I'm hoping that I get a bank account by end of next week.0

Can you be paid in cash? if the accounts are not set up in time. Does your company require weeks to change things? mine does sadly which is why I had to use mums account, but she wont nip off with my money! Some Days are Diamonds Some Days are Stones,Sometimes the hard times won't leave meBSC 162:beer:Banktupt 22 Oct 2008 at 10am!0

            Hi positivestep,
My OH, Billy, got his sortcode and account number from the Co-Op on the day we both went in to open our post-BR accounts. (Straight from court.) I was told I was "acceptive", pending further ID checks, and had my sortcode and acc/no within three or four days, the ATM card arrived within a week. The longest I've heard of it taking is 10 days, and as soon as you have an account number and sortcode, you can give them to your accounts department and feel confident that your pay will arrive as usual.

I applied for a Co-op Cashminder Account on 24 October and didn't hear anything. I rang on Monday evening asking for my account number and I was told they were not allowed to give me the details over the phone. I rang again last night as I was desperate because today is the cut off date for submitting my bank details to work and a nice understanding bank clerk asked me lots of security questions and gave me my sort code and account number. I am so relieved. I haven't got any money in my account yet, but today I set up an internet banking for my account and I am really pleased with this. I also applied for a cash card account at Barclays on 24 October and today is 4 November and I have heard nothing from Barclays. I will stick with Co-op.0

Hi, about the Baclays account, I applied for one after my bk and was told to fill out the form in branch and they sent it off with id. They said i would hear in 3/4 days (I didn't), that evening I rang just on the off chance the co-op and to my complete shock was accepted straight away. ( first thing I have been accepted for in forever, was shocked to say the least), didn't even have to take id in, everything arrived within a week, and the internet banking is great - if a little slow, keep your own record.
Anyway my oh opened a barclays a/c a few days later, so feeling annoyed that I never even heard from them I went into the branch, and he was great he tried everything he could to override the system, but after consulting with someone higher it turns out I was only turned down because I had got the co-op one so quickly, and they only let you have one a/c when bankrupt (so they told me anyway- can't swear its the complete truth but was a lovely bloke) also let slip the other bloke didn't process my application correctly. Which delayed it.0

Sharry, Barclays are big fat liars! You are not restricted to one account when BR, they just messed up!Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
