Working/Holiday Insurance

Options
My stepson is travelling to Taiwan in January.

He has a 60 day visa, which can be extended once he gets a job in Taiwan. If he gets a job, he wants to stay for maybe a year. If he doesn't get a job he will be back in 60 days.

He is a chef and he wants to work as a chef in Taiwan,as well as travel to China and Japan etc. whilst he is out there. He is 21 years old and has been a chef since leaving school at 16.

Anybody know how he can get insurance cover for this type of Holiday/work experience?

All the companies we have tried, seem confused by:
1/ Staying over 30 or 45 days.
2/ Wanting to work, whilst he is out there
3/ Being a chef.

He wants medical cover for when he is travelling and working, and if possible normal bagage and possesions cover as well.

Any clues, as all the companies we have spoken to tell us he needs to contact a specialist company, but they don't know any.
Val :)

I suggest you ask this question on the travel insurance and/or Northeast Asia branches of the lonely planet website (thorntree.lonelyplanet.com). Note that the URL does NOT begin www.

Otherwise, check out Columbus and Endsleigh in the UK, and some other global companies (one of which is linked to lonely planet, although I don't particularly recommend them).

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.
  • Thanks for the reply, have tried Endsleigh, but they can only offer cover for 60 days, which might be OK as long as he doesn't get a job.Hadn't heard of Columbus, but will try to find them.

Wasn't sure about the Lonely Planet link, as it linked you to a company based in Australia.

Any thoughts on a backpacker type policy via insureandgo.com? This allows you to extend the policy as you go rather than having to have a fixed 60 day or one year policy.
