MAC Code

Hi, I wasn't sure if this was in the right place.

I am going to switch over to O2 broadband as its £15 cheaper a month than what I currently pay.

I phoned my existing provider yesterday for the MAC Code and they said this would have to be "generated" and it would be posted to me within 48 hours.

If this correct? Or are they just trying to fob me off so me moving away from them is delayed? I'm so cynical, I know! :rotfl:

  • Companies can get away with a lot in this arena.

Some (great) companies will simply give you the code over the phone, others (naming no names) have told me in the past that I have to write to them (via snail mail) requesting a MAC code and that they will post the code back to me (the whole process taking about 3 weeks). I have vowed never to give certain companies business again because of their disconnect policies

I have kicked up a fuss about this in the past but apparently they were totally within their rights to make you jump through hoops. All things considered, 48 hours does not sound too bad...:rolleyes2

  • I'd say 48 hours is pretty standard. Shame it has to be posted though. Quite a few companies nowadays will give it to you over the phone (as mentioned above).

    A code code? ;)

A MAC has to be provided within 5 working days of being requested. That's part of OFCOM's rules.

Can I ask how long ago this was? I'm trying to get one from them now and they say they have to 'order' one and they don't get to see it so they can't give it me over the phone.

Won't you have to pay your original ISP for switching ,

When i requested mine , they said that i would have to pay a cancellation fee which is the remaining amount on the contract. In my case i would still have to pay the remaining 6 months of my contract PLUS the new ISP's fee:mad:
 I am great , yes I am

:D If you think I was useful , Thank you, for thanking me :D
  • No, my contract is up so I'm free to leave and there's no fee for switching
