Bank Transfer as Payment

As a buyer I usually offer to pay by bank transfer. Very few sellers accept it! I can only assume that the bank details involved would enable someone to set up a phony direct debit. The way round this, of course, is to use a savings account to receive payments (since you can't do a direct debit from a savings account). How strange that most sellers prefer to pay fees to paypal rather than doing this.

My point was that as a seller I would prefer my buyers to use a direct bank transfer, as I'm sure other sellers on here would agree. No chargebacks allowed, no paypal fees, no problems if it all goes wrong. OK,that last bit was a joke as I accept that sellers on here treat all their buyers the same regardless of how they pay, but for a less than honest seller bank transfers are a scammers heaven.

However, as a buyer I would not consider for the briefest moment using a bank transfer. Whilst i would hope that all sellers are honest, in the unfortunate event that I ran into a seller that considered his, or her, liability finished as soon as they put the item in the post box I like the extra leverage I get from paypal funded by a credit card. I know paypal isn't perfect, but i prefer a chance of getting my money back rather than no chance at all.

I have always assumed that most buyers think like me, hence most of my auctions being paid for by paypal.

  • I prefer buyers to pay using Bank Transfer as its safe, fast and fee-free. Having said that, it isn't that popular, as many people have said.

Most of all, its great for the seller.
    Boo!
  • im an ebaypowerseller and use bank transfer to be paid for items all the time, mostly from germans or french, but think about it this way, paypal will charge you 3.4% of the amount you are getting transfered and then it'll take about 5 days for thos efunds to work their way to your bank.
a bank transfer will take about 3 days max and its free to you.
go on, save the 3.4% and buy some tlottery tickets with it, you never know.... you may be lucky!

Direct debits are fully guranteed - if they are wrongly deducted the bank has to refund in full.

A bank transfer and a direct debit are two totally different things. Bank transfers aren't covered under the Direct Debit Guarantee.

I think the point being made about Direct Debit Guarantee's was to re-assure the comment about someone being able to use a seller's bank account details to set-up a phony Direct Debit aginst their account.
