i think it just means a laptop repair place report. independent rather than your sending it back to the maker but someone qualified to check it over and write out a report saying what the fault is. It needs to be a professional though, not just a friend who is handy with pcs because they will expect it to be typed out on company paper and have a trading address etc .0

This is an area people get so confused and everyone is an expert unfortunately.
My understanding is that the you have 6 years from purchase to challenge that a product is faulty due to a defect at the time of manufacture. The retailers are well within their rights to request an independent report confirming if the fault is caused by a manufacturing defect, if they don't agree with this report they are then allowed to request that you obtain a report from the manufacturer stating the product is faulty due to a defect at manufacture. This is all of course to be done at your expense so is not a recommended route to take. If the retailer accepts that it is a manufacturing defect then they are at liberty to refund all costs incurred by yourself and provide a free repair or replacmenet, whichever the retailer decides.
This doesn't include faults caused by genral wear and tear, the retailer only has 6 years responsibility to provide a route for repair, this doesnt mean they have to pay for this repair.
~If you are just making an insurance claim then ignore all the previous as it doesnt apply to you, it is really just a response to the previous poster.
My advice would be to always contact trading standards, they are the real experts in these matters.0 -
I smashed my laptop to bits.........:D
Three new mobo's two new DVD drives and various other problems.
It's a Toshiba from that well known group of companies that every hates but still waste their money. The laptop was only 14 months old when I killed it, (well more like put it out of its misery).
On the up side, I did eventually get them to admit it was a brick and cough up some money.
I still dont have a laptop I spent the money on therapy (beer)
Anyways, for any one buying from said large group of companies, a word of advice,,,,,
Make sure you know your rights before you get in touch with anybody regarding faulty goods. It could save you a whole heap of heart ache.....:cool:To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
have curry's told you this? If so, just tell them goods have to last a reasonable time (upto 6 years) under the sale of goods act (as amended). 12 months + 2 weeks is not a reasonable time, and as the laptop has had repairs before, it was clearly not fit for purpose at the point of sale, and you would like a replacement or repair or refund forthwith.
Don't let them palm you off, they know an independent report will cost too much.
if the store won't play ball, write to them, if they still won't play ball, write to DSG head office.
Before you do this, try taking it up with the manufacturer, say you didn't expect their product to last 12 months, and would they be prepared to help you. It isn't their responsibility, but they may help
No it wasn't currys who told me that i needed a report they won't even look at it unless i pay £120, it was the manufacturers who told me that when i rang them up to complain as i'd already had it out with the manger at currys this morning they have basically washed their hands of me now as the 12 month warranty ended on 7th oct 08 he said 2 days or 2 weeks there's nothing we can do.0 -
What is the actual problem with the machine? My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.0

What is the actual problem with the machine?
Its just not turing on no power going to the laptop at all done all the checks that i can but without having another charger to test it against i can't find out if its that, thats gone or the battery or that there is a fault with the laptop but currys have wiped there hands cos the warranty ended on the 7th oct 080 -
Spill a glass of pop in it, claim off your insurance. It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

How about taking the laptop to maplins and explaining you arent sure if it needs a new power supply and could they plug one in for you to see if it works?
I have one near me and they have been very accomodating when I have had techi problems of that nature.
(I have a car power suppy for my laptop and blew the fuse in it and they changed it for me and plugged it in to an adapter and checked all was working before I left the shop and never even charged me for the fuse.)
At least then you would know for sure if it was the lappy or the power supply.0
