Interesting uncle General
Peabody Trust is still going now - some of their buildings are really very attractive.
Reminds me also of a boyfriend I once had who said he lived in Chelsea - when I went home with him, he was indeed in Chelsea, in a council block just behind Kings Road.Wonder how much they go for now.
He escaped from his camp once and hid in someone's wardrobe for 2 weeks apparently before getting fed up and returning. He used to get Red Cross rations and they weren't that bothered by him as he was a civilian and not Jewish or gay or anything (I think he kept the communist bit to himself). He reckoned he had a more comfortable war than most British people.
My other Uncle hated him for it.0 -
So it wasnt a pow camp, more a detainee camp? Not as harsh I guess and certainly a bit more leg room than a wardrobe0

It was called a detention camp and they were fed and inspected by the Red Cross regularly. The worst thing was having to make a razor blade last 20 days he reckoned. He said he ate normally and got beer and fags and all that stuff. It was just a bit boring.
My other Uncle married a Dutch woman who was in occupied Amsterdam. He was also at the Nuremburg trials (not on trial!) and took a pretty dim view of Germans and anyone who didn't harbor a violent hatred of them.
As you can imagine, they weren't the best of friends.0 -
that's interesting - normally something with such a price drop would never have hit the market with the new price. an agent would have passed it on to one of their 'friends' for a quick deal and some sort of 'compensation' for giving them the exclusivity. this happens more for investors rather than family homes though.
it probably shows that the market is very slow at that level of property and the demand for them isn't there.
More likely the money / financing isn't there for them - and prices depressed further by jobs losses and those in fear of losing their jobs.0 -

I agree, it's really quite vulgar....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I like the new avatar. Is that Isaac again, or have you dredged the photo up from your youth just to prove that all your family looked the same at 3 years old?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Despite the large price cut, the original house remains unsold.
Here is another very large cut at the top end of the market:

Down from £15 million to £12.5 million, 16% or so....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
