Need a brain, who understands time differences! Ta!

Folks - would really appreciate if someone can answer the scenario below. I've C & P'd it from a MSN conversation I was having, so may look a bit odd! Sorry!

If we leave LGW (on Tues 28 Oct) :T at 8.15am, that's 2.15am or 4.15am in Atlanta? (coz our clocks change THIS w/e).
We land in Atlanta at 2.05pm - so that's either 10 or 12 hours! To Atlanta? !!!!!!?
We gonna have to flap our arms all the way? :rotfl:

The clocks here change this w/e. So 7am becomes 6am & you 'gain' an hour.

The USA changes next w/e (I think?)

Atlanta is 'normally' 5 hrs difference from here. So is currently 6pm ish

My flight details say depart Gatwick 8.15am, arrive Atlanta 2.05pm
So............ nearly 6hrs
PLUS the difference
That's a helluva long flight time!
And its not that much more than NY is it?

Was wondering if the difference is 6 hrs or 4 hrs next week?

Thanking you muchly!

A

Our clocks go back 1 week before those in the US, so the difference will be four hours for that week. Both this year and last, the NFL has used that smaller than usual time difference to broadcast its UK game, so I wonder whether that's deliberate on their part, and that's how I know, because I went to the game last year and will go again on Sunday.

So what does that mean for your flight? Its bl**dy long and you should get flapping your arms in practice now...

Flight time between London at Atlanta is around 9 hours. You leave UK at 08.15am = 4.15am in Atlanta. You arrive 9 hours 50 mins later - 2.05pm Atlanta time.

Of course the 9h50 includes time spent on the ground, taxiing, some margin buit in etc so you will probably be in the air more like 9 hours.
  • Have a look on a map, Atlanta is quite a bit further south-west that NY (about 800 miles!) 10 hours is about right, no arm flapping required!
we have love enough to light the streets.

    Depart LGW 0815 (GMT)
    Arrive ATL 1405 (GMT -4)

    Convert both times to GMT

    LGW 0815 (stays the same)
    ATL 1805 (having added 4)

Subtract departure time from arrival time to find travel time

    9 hours and 50 minutes.

So the flight is indeed powered by flapping wings. Hard to believe that a jet could take that long.

10 hours is pretty long for a flight to Atlanta, though the return flight will be shorter as you'll likely have a good tail wind. I've flown to Orlando (approx 1 hour south) in 9 hours and to the Caribbean in 10 hours so am surprised that its so long. I've also flown to Atlanta but can't remember how long the flight was, pretty sure it was shorter.

I know that some planes are faster than others, and that if you slow the speed at which the plane flies down a little that the airline saves fuel. It may also be that the flight duration is calculated differently (eg from the gate rather than from take off), so there could be a whole host of reasons why.

BTW, when I flew to Atlanta I was watching the screen that shows the decent into the airport. I was in a middle seat in economy (yuk) so couldn't see out of the window. I screamed when I thought we'd hit another plane on the way down. I then realised that it was the ground, we'd actually landed and that Atlanta airport is quite a bit above sea level....

Sometimes you'll find the flight time is less on the way back (i.e. 8 1/2 hours) because of the prevailing winds. But Atlanta is quite a bit further than NYC - 9 hours is about right for actual time spent in the air.

I just got back from Atlanta, it took 10 hours going; due to a slight route change, and just over 7 on the way back. We had high "tail winds" so apparently that help

    Enjoy your trip!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I'm really not that daft & am fairly well travelled but I just couldn't get my head round all that last night!

In the (very!) cold light of day this morning, on the ferry on the way to work,
it dawned on me to convert to GMT & do the sums. Duh!

I'll have a GREAT time - & be back here after 3 WHOLE WEEKS! Yay!
