How to break in leather boots! Please help!

Hi all,

I have just bought the most gorgeous boots, but they are a tad nipped in at the feet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stretch them a bit? Dont fancy going down the lets be crippled with skint heels routine! I have done it before and its not nice.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • In the old days, leather used to be softened with dubbin. I have never used this stuff, and I believe it can be overused.
Try wearing the boots around the house for short periods until you have broken them in. There are patent boot stretchers about, but the ones I have seen only operate on the legs.
Small change can often be found under seat cushions.

My son had this problem with a pair of shoes. He bought a shoe-stretcher device (looks rather like an expandable shoe-tree, but also has little knobby bits you can put in to correspond with the places where the boots are pinching, though you may not need to use these bits - they are useful if the boot is pinching your little toe, for example.) and some Shoe Stretcher spray. You only need to buy one of the shoe-tree type things, as you can use the same one for each boot in turn. It did work quite well, and didn't make the shoes a funny shape!

On the subject of boots, I'd love some but have had only 2 pairs of long boots in my entire life (I'm 52) because I've got very big calves. I needed Extra-wide boots even when I was a size 14 (I'm an 18 at the moment as I can't exercise much), solely because of my calves! Does anyone know where I might find boots for larger legs? :rudolf:

Sorry, I suppose I've kind of hijacked the thread... But would be so grateful for any advice.

Thanks pink-winged and superscotsman for your advice. Hopefully il be prancing around in them shortly, lol.

Ivyleaf i have found the best place to go in that case is evans, all their boots are designed for people with larger calfs. So it makes it a lot easier than attempting to squueze into skinny fit ones! You can tell im envious of thin legged people.

I myself have quite muscly calfs after years of horseriding and other such sports, so i do struggle sometimes but these gorgeous boots i just bought were from the look again catalogue where they had a selection of wider fit ones.

    Hope that helps!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Dunno if it's manageable but visited the Roald Dhal museum recently and in the anecdotes about his life there was this one which I liked...
To strech boots , he used to fill a solid bag with water, fit it in the boot and pop it in the freezer....
If the bag is very resistant, you could probably try this outside at the moment!

The army method of breaking in boots involved urinating in them.
Just wearing them every day around the house will help warm and soften the leather.

As this thread isn't strictly Old Style, I'll move it over to the I wanna board where hopefully you will get more replies.

These older threads might give you some ideas of where to look for boots for ladies with larger calves:

Boots for the larger calf size

Boots for women who are not stick thin

Thanks, Pink! Those threads have given me some ideas. Will have a look at Duoboots.co.uk when finished surfing O/S (that'll probably be tonight then....!) :snow_grin
