Edf Gas Bill Help!!!

Between December 2004 and July 2005 EDF billed me on estimated gas usage based on the previous occupants of my house, “a family of five”, bill total £600, they advised me to change to prepayment in order to clear this bill.
This was supposed to be deducted as I top up gas card; meter was changed and EDF loaded a total debt of £400 on it, without my knowledge; this debt was cleared by 2006.
I just tried to switch suppliers but EDF refused to let me switch saying that I still owe them £200!!!!
I thought the whole debt was loaded on when I changed to prepayment in 2005 July, but apparently they only loaded £400, they confirmed this was a mistake by them, but still demanding that I pay it now.
From the time I changed to prepayment in 2005 until now that I want to switch, EDF never demanded payment from me or advised my account is in debt.
This summer they even gave me a credit of about £90 as I was over charged by them.
Please what are my rights in this situation as I believe this wasn’t my fault?.

Don't want to sound stupid but why were you paying for previous occupants usage?

As you have had a prepayment meter for 3 years EDF should have sent you at least 2 annual statements (thing that normally says this is not a bill). That should detail the status of your account. I would check what the latest one of those says because even though you are paying through a prepayament meter that statement give the true financial position.

when the bill came i could not remember if i gave them a reading when i moved in as it has been more that 9 months, didn't know about this site then, lol, i just accepted the bill after much hassling on phone which they tried and convinced me its my fault, as i did not have the actual reading with me it was a bit difficult to prove my self.

i never received any annual bill or letter confirming my usage, but every quater since begining of last year they will send me a letter advising to change my gas card, they will then send me a new card.

I would get onto EDF and ask why you have not received any annual bill/statement. That should provide a breakdown of (a) what you have used, (b) monies you have paid and (c) any debt.
