 I thought this was an MSE site!

I feel really bad for my wife now. She does not even have an engagement ring. There is no way I could afford something like that and our wedding rings were only £200.

I know she really wants an eternity ring. I hope one day I will be able to afford to give her something as beautiful as these rings.

I feel such a loser when I read threads like this!
It doesn't matter how big or small her ring is. I just love diamonds so we saved hard for what I have.

We saved big with my eBay ring, it's worth 4 times what we paid for it and have a certificate to prove it. So it's an investment, if you will!

You can save a lot buying 2nd hand from eBay or auctions. But you have to be careful that it's authentic. We only looked at rings that came with a signed insurance valuation.

Please, please don't feel like that! that wasn't the purpose. i have been putting money aside since I was 15 for my wedding rings (am 28 now) - its a girl thing!!
I am not a jewelery person normally - don't even own a watch - these will be the only 2 pieces I will own. also by having the ring made - probably in Hatton garden in London - I will save a fortune.
a ring is not about what it cost but what it means to the wearer. the wedding ring is sooo me. i have had that picture for nearly 8 years (4 years BEFORE I met my man!!! ) I always said that it was the ring for me.
I sure your wife will be happy with whatever you choose - because it came from YOU. jenny xxx

That is a good tip, thanks!

This is the cheaper end of what she was looking at for a special anniversay in 18 months

She wants an 18ct white gold at least one carat of diamonds eternity ring. I could probably save up £700 by that point, but not much more.

The only problem I have buying secondhand is the history of the ring eg if someone was selling an eternity ring because of divorce I would be worried it was bad luck.
  • i know its not quite the same, but how about this:

    Channel-Set Ring with Princess-Cut Diamonds
the 10 diamonds total up to0.5ct and which are a F/G colour and VS clarity
In 18k white gold it will set you back about £730-750 depending on the way the exchange rate goes. comparing it with the earnest jones equivalent: here which is £780. One difference is that the earnest jones ring has 17 smaller diamonds, but the total weight is the same - but they dont state what the grading of the stones are...you may find they are around I colour and SI/I clarity - so may have eye visable inclusions, and a slight yellow tint (princess and bagette stones show the body colour of the diamond sooner than an equivalent Round brilliant stone)

If you DO care about this sort of thing, close your ears if you have a H Samuel/Ernest Jones diamond, I have found their diamond quality to be very poor. Sorry! Many inclusions and not pure white. If you buy from Hatton Garden/birmingham jewellery quarter or online you can get a certificated diamond so you will know exactly what you are getting.

MEN! Investigate the '4Cs' before you buy a diamond, they are VERY important!

Weeeeell that's what I did!!!! But I too made sure I researched the 4Cs before I went looking. OH originally bought me a ring from H Samuel. £600 for a 18k yellow gold 0.4ct diamond with many flaws. I might seem like a !!!!! here but I made him return it. Then we went trawling on eBay and found my ring for £450.... :)

We already bought it as diamonds are only going to get more expensive right? It's a 0.9ct solitaire and the wedding ring is half eternity :)

Why do you say that? With a global recession ongoing, jewellery sales are not surprisingly down. And precious stones prices will drop.

Plus, there's no shortage of precious stones. They're not especially useful or scarce.
