Help! Magnet has affected screen!

DS came home today & showed me a largish magnet, I took little notice what he did with it after the inital discusson.

I have now switched on the pc to find the screen is a patchwork of colours - none of which should be there! And after checking, yes he did put it beside the screenwhile he played! Its not too bad, as I can still see most of the screen as it should be.

The question is this, will the CRT `reset` if I switch it off for a bit or not? Basic physics really, but I can`t remember that far back!!!

I really cant afford to buy a new screen!

  • shut down computer
Pull monitor plug out of socket for 1 minute
    Put monitor plug back
    Restart
Degauss Monitor (some monitors have a button for this)

If it is a CRT it will almost certainly return to normal within a day or two.

Most CRTs automatically degauss (demagnetise) every time they are switched on but this is only designed to eliminate the natural build up of magnetisation during normal usage.

If your son has played around with the magnet, he may have magnetised parts of the tube chassis and you will have to wait until this magnetisation slowly disperses.

It is very unlikely that the effect will be permanent so just wait a day or two and see what happens.

Don’t be too hard on the lad. I played around with a magnet making pretty patterns on my TV and screwed it up for a few days and I was 45 years old at the time. :o

It was fine again within 48 hours. :D

    Cheers.

I wont be punishing my DS for this, as posted, it easly done & at 10, I am sure he understood the theory(that was the discusion,) but not so sure he understood the practial implications!

Will be switching monitor off on the way out to work.

Assuming it does work, not that I doubt you, I wondered how as it a magnetic function

The only thing I thought of was by turning 180 degrees you are also reversing the Earths magnetic field flow within the CRT, so maybe every little helps?
