Barclays Bank really messed up!!

No problem at all I don't want to put you in a difficult position. I probably will pursue it as the damage has been done and I have now closed my account down. Thankfully my salary wasn't going into that account!I went into my local Branch to query the address etc and was given a Customer Complaint Acknowledgement slip with a reference on it stating that the complaint was being handled by Retail Bank CR DC Complaints Gateway. I hadn't heard anything so I contacted Customer Service and was told verbally that the complaint was closed down, as they didn't want to write to me because of the problem surrounding the address. Not sure whether there is more they can do - apparently someone had trawled through all information but was inconclusive?
It's likely just gone to Level 2. Confirm your address with them and ask for the complaint to be re-opened as you're not satisfied with the resolution given.
Ask for a full explanation, and what they will do to put it right. If you don't get the answer you want, tell them what you want. Bear in mind we tend to have set guidelines for this sort of thing, so you're not going to get away with asking for a few grand.

No problem - will take your advice and contact them again to get the complaint re-opened. Its not about getting loads of compensation, its more about the principal of it, in that my ex-hubbie is now privy to information that I didn't want him knowing. Just want to make that point strongly that they caused a bit of a problem in the middle of quite a messy divorce. Will have to inform my solicitor as it's part of a chain of letters so maybe she'll want to take it up for me too? Thanks for all of your advice and help - I really appreciate it ;o)0

Hi Roxy,
I don't think this is just a case of human error, I think this is just the way barclays deal with joint accounts. I have several accounts with barclays including a joint account with my husband. My husband recently phoned to change the address on our joint account. I expected to have to change the address for my accounts myself but then started receieving all my statments at my new address - they had changed my details automatically. This doesn't seem quite right, does it?!0 -
hi Roxy
I would complain to fso as Barclays may well have broken the data protection act. also if your ex has opened your mail he has also broken the law as it is a criminal offence to open any item of mail which is not addressed you.
Complain Roxy, be firm and push it further.

No, it doesn't.
In the case of joint accounts, the address for the account itself can be changed by either party. That said, it is only the account address is changed, not the person's address. They are kept separate, so you can have mail sent to somewhere other than your residence, for example.
Therefore, the only way to change your address would be to actually load up your personal record and go through and change your address on your personal record and then on your accounts, as it is a two stage process.
So I'd be really interested to know how that could happen as I doubt this story. What would William Shatner do?0
