laptop screen gone all funny

Yesterday my toddler knocked the laptop over and it fell flat on its face :-(

The laptop comes on alright - but the screen keeps 'jumping'. The images develop lines and become WIDE as well...

Its still useable but u need to type really gently or give the laptop a 'friendly tap' to stop the 'jumping'.

I cant afford to get it repaired till month end but is it gonna cost me an arm and a leg ? Any sort of guidance would be appreciated cos i have diddly-squat knowledge bout 'puters.

Incidentally - its now out of warranty - but otherwise is in perfect condition :j

It could just be the ribbon cable to the display which has become dislodged, and won't cost much to repair - If you are competent with electronics / opening computers up, you may well be able to fix yourself.

Or it could be something much more serious, component failure etc, very hard to tell, but would be much more expensive.

Do you have accidental cover on your house contents insurance, it may well be covered if you do!

PS Make a backup of everything important in case you've done any other damage to the laptop.

Would these be expensive jobs ? Would they take a couple of days to sort out?

A good way to check if it part of the problem is try to plug your laptop into a different monitor and see of the lines etc are still there. There should be a port on the side of your laptop which is usually blue where you can plug a normal desktop pc monitor/screen into.

Plug it in and tell us if the lines etc are still there. If they are not than you can definetly pin point a problem on your screen. If there is , then theres a more complicated problem in the actual computer

    Hope this helps

I am sorry to hear of your problem but trust me your not the only one who has had the kids wreck there pc :)

There is also no need to worry as that is not going to do you any good.

Is there any chance you have a tele that you can connect it up to? Or , if anyone you know locally will quickly let you pop in and attatch there monitor to your laptop? Obviously tomorow as this time is a bit inconvenient lol :)

If you do a search for your model and technical or service manual, there are websites out there giving guides on how to take a laptop to pieces. You may have to pay a few quid for the manual, but they're really good.

Worse comes to worse you might be able to buy a 2nd hand machine off of ebay and strip out the screen to replace yours?

    Thanks everyone for your re=assurance.
Think I'll pop into my local PC guy tomorrow. It works fine but occasionally the lines appear making everything jump - or it starts to fade out..
    Feel better now!
