odd problem with xbox 360

as we now have a full 1080p tv in the living room i reset the settings on my xbox 360 to 1080p. however when i later took the console upstairs to play on in my bedroom on the 720p tv there was no picture. i ended up having to take it downstairs and interupt the film people were watching to be able to change the setting back on the 1080p tv so that it would work on the tv upstairs.
so my question is if i ever forget to reset the setting on the console in future how can i avoid this problem without having to disturb peoples viewing?

it seems a bit daft because what if you had one tv that was 1080p but got rid of it because it was faulty and then bought a new tv that was only 720p how would you be able to reset the console to 720p if you cant see the picture?
i am only useing a component cable by the way. when i switched the switch on the cable to regular tv the picture appeared but i couldnt change the settings for hd only for sd. could simply buying a hd cable be the answer? or would the problem still occur?

Have a read through the manual. It'll tell you how to reset the display settings for when you don't have a display signal. I'm not sure what it is for the xbox but on the PS3 you need to hold down the power switch for 5 seconds or so from being turned off.

i dug out the manual and it doesnt say anything about it.
i cant understand why if the console is set to 1080p and it is then connected to a tv that cant display that why doesnt it flash up on screen that the tv cant display the current setting and do you want the console to reset the display to an appropriate setting, yes or no. that is what it should do in my opinion.

I had a similar problem, my LCDTV does 1080p and when I brought it up to the 'study' the monitor only does 1080i. I was able to plug the composite (yellow) cable into it, (and I'm not even sure if I had to flick the switch at the xbox end) and I'm sure I was able to change to 1080i in the Dashboard.

  • when we use the '360 on the tv upstairs, its the tv we have to change and not the console, i dont know if this is because we are using the HDMI cable supplied with the console and it automatically adjusts to the output.!

That's the TVs fault, not the console. The console has no idea that the TV can't display it, how can it?

i dont think you can blame the tv because it cant display 1080p. i think it is a fault in the design on the console because surely when they design these things they must consider all possible situations. there is a risk that someone could have a 1080p tv and then replace it with a 720p tv. so if they forgot to reset the console to 720p they are going to be left in the situation i was. i had to switch the switch to sd and then count how many movements of the left stick it took to get to were i change the setting. i then switched it back to hdtv on the cable and did that and ok'd it by pressing the green a button and hoped it worked.
