Restricting internet access times

Does anyone know of any free programmes that you use to restrict times when the internet can be used on your computer. I'd like to be able to stop access after midnight and also for a couple of hours in the afternoon and evening. Teenage kids - nuff said!

If you use a router to connect to the internet, some of these already have this feature built into them (restricting access times).

The one I use is taking the filters out and/or disconnecting the phone. You could always turn it off too?! Dont let them dictate (I'm in the same position with teens!), easier said than done, you need to distract them. Let me know what works & I'll try it!! :rudolf:

Oh yes if you have a router, disconnect it!

  • re: Rex's post, (if you have broadband), the Netgear routers can do this, and can also block certain keywords (of your choice) in the site address. With the latest firmware, it integrates with Trend Micro home security/parental control..

Login to your router. Click schedule (menu on the left) to set access times. Click Block Sites to set site blocking (by time, keyword or site).

enter admin and password, then click on block sites and schedule..

If you want to use the Trend parental control stuff (free for a year), you may need to upgrade your firmware by downloading a .img file from the netgear website, and upgrade it using the "Router upgrade" screen.

This is the dg834G page with downloads http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/dg834gv2.asp

Just make sure you don't save the router admin password in IE, (after changing it from the default), or they might just undo your changes when you aren't looking..

  • I don't have a router. Just straightforward BT broadband modem. You'd think something so obvious would be built in to the connection program.
