wanting to leave while in statutory periodic... help

hi can anyone tell me if you leave before the notice period ends on a statutory periodic tenancy (one month from next rent due date). Are you legally liable for the whole rent up to that date? As i have found a new house out of the area i am wanting to move to and they are unwilling to wait almost 2 months for me to move in when they could rent it to someone else.
Any views, help would be greatly appreciated.

I think legally you need to give one month's notice from a rent day. However, it may be worth asking your landlord as they may agree to you leaving earlier with no penalty. I am a LL and have in the past agreed to this. Other LLs may disagree, but I didn't think it was unreasonable under the circumstances (they needed a cheaper place due to a change in their circumstances), as they had been good tenants (and I have had the other sort!)0

Agree completely with this advice. Ask nicely, give at least 1 calendar month of notice and co-operate with viewings and it would be a crazy LL to persue you for the few weeks of rent. I certainly don't bother.
In fact if they make you stay to the end then deny them viewings until after you leave. This will ensure that the LL ends up with a longer void for being unreasonable.
