Will a bank loan me if I didnt pay them in the past???

Options
Hi there, I hope this is the right forum as I'm new here.
Around about 12 years ago I ran up about £2000 on a Bank of Scotland switch card which I had being paying off untill I got payed off. I then stopped paying it completely, I went to see a lawyer about going bankrupt and was told not too as my debt would be wiped in 3 years. I moved home 3 times since and never heard anything again.
Fast forward 12 years, now I have 3 kids a mortgage and I've just finished college and started in a good job but we need to locate closer to my work.
The Halifax seems to be the best deal for me and also gives a 90% mortgage(don't have much of a deposit), would I just be opening a massive can of trouble if I applied to them for a mortgage or would it be wrote off completely??

Any help would be fantastic , thanks !!!

I would think a debt from 12 years ago had disappeared from your file long ago but to be on the safe side you could always get a copy of your file and double check.

    How irresponsbile.

You know as a broker that clients who lie to you are a. Committing Fraud and b. Waste hours of time for both parties.

I cannot believe you posted that. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Would you lend to someone that did not repay you, irrespective of how long ago it was? I think you have a bloody cheek for £2K!

I hope this is not how you are teaching your kids to behave.

Forums are great for help and support, but when it comes to helping people dodge debt and then try to get a loan from the same provider because they are the most competitive it's a step too far.

Surely some of these threads, if not on the wrong side of the law, are unethical and should be removed?

Ask yourself this question - if you lent someone some money, and they didn't pay it back, would you lend them any more money???

  • I will not go into great detail but 12 years ago I had a lot of problems and was a very different person, my quality of life was terrible and financialy I was broke. I come from a very poor family that mostly end up on the dole or an early grave. So I tried to rebuild a decent life for myself and give my kids what I never had. Some people are lucky and get raised well and get a head start in life and some don't, some people actually struggle. I'm trying to do the best I can. I'm sorry to interupt your wonderful life of snobbery with my real life.

Well done in turning it around, I applaud you, if only many more would do likewise.

My point stands though, essentially you came on to a web site to ask how to borrow from a bank without alerting them to the fact you owed them £2000.

I can accept that having turned it around you may simply move on without paying. However, your action of coming on to a web site for help in avoiding what you actually owe gives the impression you find it acceptable. It's more your attitude to the debt I have the issue with than the debt itself.

Best of luck with the new job.

I know peelerfart, it's difficult, but it just sometimes appears that anything goes on here. Seems to me that from asking for help with genuine issues there has been a deterioration to asking for advice on how to avoid paying legitimate debts, with the lenders being made out to be the bad guys and being expected to be responsible for every defaulters personal circumstances, as well as suffering the financial loss.

Yes we have all done things we regret however, when it becomes acceptable to go public in asking how to avoid paying (rather how to prevent) I question how much regret there is. I think if there was true regret here the OP would not have felt comfortable posting.

Let me ask you; how do you think these people would feel/respond if their employers started a forum to discuss how they could avoid paying contractual salaries and benefits, especially at the end of the month when the work has already been done?
