  • I went to a lawyer about the debt as £2000 was about how much I received a year in benifits when I lost my job, to me it was a massive amount, If I was just trying to avoid the debt I could have just ignored it. Nowadays I try to prevent younger family members and friends from getting into easy debt which can easily spiral out of control, and prevent them getting mortgages when they do grow up. I wish nothing more than I would have never got into debt and got a mortgage when I was younger, I've just made mistakes and I'm starting the game of life a bit later.

apply for a free months trial to see your credit files. print them off, check to make sure everything on there is correct.
then cancel your free trial once you have made sure everything is ok.

as above 6 years should be the max for any default.

    Hi Clueless Jock,

I agree with you (again) ,and there are many points that you have raised that can really only be answered by the OP.

I would like to add though that ,possibly through the anomynity of the forum it would allow people to ask questions and post information for public discussion that otherwise might have gone unanswered ,hence the openness.

But I think we digress and this post should serve perhaps to bump up the OP.

    I agree.

I do feel the OP has done well to turn himself around and ensure his kids will have a better opportunity. That in itself is an achievement, so well done and keep up the good work.

Re the money, boggie40 is right, although the money is still a debt and they have the right to ask for it, the OP has no legal obligation to pay it. So he can rest easy on that one and simply risk applying for the mortgage in the knowledge he does not have to accept liability for the outstanding loan.
