They're not the only company who do that. AFAIAA, their only responsibility under the sale of goods act is to offer a repair or exchange. I think you'll find that pointing you in the direction of the manufacturer fulfills that legal obligation as long as the manufacturer adequately repairs or replaces the product. Staples would be responsible if the manufacturer did not meet that obligation as your contract is with them. Thanks for the info though. Some companies do do much better, but the IBM is a good price and I think their warranty is still pretty good so we'll take our chances.

re Staples guarantees, if you buy something from them with say a one year warranty or guarantee or whatever you want to call it (I appreciate that there is probably a legal distinction between the two), if it mal-functions after I think it is 90 days after the purchase date (not sure exactly of time period but somewhere between 28 and 90 days, check instore for details) YOU, THE CONSUMER, are responsible for contacting the manufacturer of the product (invariably an 0870 job) and arranging for it to be returned for repair/replacement. All that Staples will do is give you a contact number.
It is no good turning up at the store with the product in its original packaging and clutching your receipt expecting to be given a replacement.
This happened to me with a Zen micro about a month ago, the infamous earphone jack problem, fortunately for me it was only £4-50 p + p. I'd hate to think what it would be for a laptop. I got fed up trying to explain the finer points of the Sale of Goods Act only to be confronted with "It is not Company policy....etc."
I understand that Staples will sell you an additional Insurance policy/Service agreement ? at the point of sale which covers probs. after the "qualifying period" for the length of the guarantee.

Sorry to disagree with you but it's the person who sells you the item who is ultimately responsible for the item if it does not work. If anyone tells you differently then report them to trading standards regardless what their company policy states. As most electrical items have a one year guarantee then they foot the responsibility.
Had this problem with a well known internet electronics store and they backed down after i threatened them with this.

    Cheers

  • Yeahbutnobutyeahbut, I know the score. Staples have a rather large sign up in store stating their policy on guarantees and when I mentioned the legal position from information that I had obtained both from this site and from Trading Standards they merely retorted they had a good relationship with Trading Standards !
I would have liked to have pursued the issue but I am constrained not by finance but by time, I really must look for a sister site to this one possibly entitled Time saving expert ?

I purchased the Fujitsu V2040 from Staples yesterday and am very pleased with it. The only annoying thing I’ve noticed though is that the mouse pointer will sometimes spontaneously left click itself without me even touching the left button.
  • Do you get a mouse supplied with it then or is it your own and like me you get fed up using the touch pad ?

I have previously bought notebooks from Dell and after 3 years of careful use casing started to crack around the screen frame. My company has 2 Fujitsu Siemens notebooks that have performed pretty good until recently when the screen goes white every now and again.

The best notebooks by far IMHO are supplied by Evesham https://www.evesham.co.uk no problems to date on 3 notebooks and come with 3 year warranty and the company are very nice to deal with.

I meant the touchpad but silly me didn't realise that it was set to "tap to click". Didn't even know about that feature until I read it in another thread. When I can I do plug in my own normal mouse as I'm all thumbs when it comes to using the touchpad!
