Tax & MOT when getting a car from Mainland?

So, I tried to register my car in NI... and failed.
They just sent me all the documents back because they need additional docs. (Proof of identity, proof of address etc.). When I registered my wifes NI purchased car we didn't need any of that.
But the one thing that bugs me even more is that the car had 12 months tax when I bought it. Now they tell me that I need to retax it in NI before I can register it in my name in NI. The fact that it has valid Tax (purchased in England) is not sufficient to register it here.
They gave me 2 options:
- either wait until tax is up and then register it here (which would be almost a year)
- purchase new tax in NI and then apply for a refund from the tax office in England
How stupid is that? Far too much hassle for what is a transaction within the same country. I would have expected them to be able to transfer this over.

Go into you local tax office and hammer it out with them... this all sounds rediculous.. My wife & I bought our car in England... brought it back here on tax bought in England... The car is now registerd in Northern Ireland on English plates (You don't have to change the registration)
I found most of the staff in our local tax office didn't have a clue so your better going in and asking to see a manger and sort the matter out once and for all... It's what I had to do after the dopes at the front counter mucked it up twice!!Live, Love & Laugh A Lot!0 -
PS.... on the documentation.. had the same problems myself... Where public bodies are concerend I always send too much documentation, so if they ask for one form of ID send two, 1 Utility bill send two differnt types.. They have NO excusses then!!Live, Love & Laugh A Lot!0

We had the same when re registering here - so we just waited till the tax was up - a whole year in hubbys case as his road tax ran out the day we left england0 -
I know it may seem a horrible thing to say in the current climate but the sooner they emalgimate the whole DVLA tax office the better.. Honestly you'd think they aould all have access to eachothers records and would work closely together but it seems that's beyond them.. (the wanders of modern technology!!) We can fly to the moon. bank on line. transfer money across the world at the click of a mouse button, multi-nationals can operate from opposite corners of the world but two UK public bodies can't liase together for the greater public good... genious!!Live, Love & Laugh A Lot!0

dsab, Don't worry about it. You can drive it on a GB reg, Mot and tax until they expire, you will then need to register the car in NI when the tax expires, they won't charge you to reg it then either and you can choose to retain GB reg or take new NI reg.
Just leave it until the tax is up. All I needed to take when I did mine was the V5 and had to fill out the V10 form to register it and pay for the years (or 6 months if you wish) tax.0 -
A similar enquiry, I brought a car from Scotland a few months ago, taxed until July in GB. However, the MOT expires in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if I need to register the car in NI before then, in order to have the MOT here. The thing is, there is a good chance I'll return in Scotland in June, so I would like to avoid registering it here...
Any ideas?0
