Tax & MOT when getting a car from Mainland?

Unfortunately my car has given up on me, and I have decided to get a new (used) car from the Mainland. Unfortunately the ones I was interested in were not widely available in NI or just much more expensive.

Now I have found what I want and intend to go to England over the weekend to pick it up.

But this brings up a few questions, and hope someone might be able to answer them:

1) The Car has just gotten it's first MOT. Will it be valid in NI as well, or will I have to get it redone in NI?

2) Can I just register it in NI like any car I would have bought here, or do I need a new Plate or a new V5?

3) The Car is currently untaxed. As I can't drive it over without tax I will ask the Garage to tax it before I pick it up. I assume the tax will still be valid over here. Is that correct, or do I have to get a new NI Issued Tax Disc?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but as I am not a "native" I just want to cover all the bases before going ahead with it.

Cheers,
dsab

I moved from England to N.Ireland and brought my car with me.

Both tax and MOT issued on the mainland are valid here.

Yes, you can register it here like any other car you would have bought.

If you are a permanent resident here, don't forget your driver's licence will need changing too.

    No question is stupid. ;)

The MOT will be valid but you'll need to get it tested over here when it runs out next year. The process is very different here than it is in GB so be prepared. You'll need to book your test at least 6 weeks in advance.

You'll need a new V5(NI) if you register it over here but you don't need to do it before you bring the car over. Get it over and then sort it out after. When you apply for a new V5(NI) you'll get the option to change the plate to NI format. This isn't compulsory. I decided not to change mine when I brought it over.

Your tax is valid but next year when you renew it you'll have to go to the DVLNI office to do it. This is only for the first time you tax it, after that you can do it in the Post Office as normal.

Thanks for the responses. Much appreciated. Good to know that it doesn't involve any additional hassle (other then getting it over).

    regards,

You shouldn't have to worry about the MOT. As far as I know cars in Northern Ireland only need tested if they are over 4 years old. In England an MOT is required after 3 years, so if you say it has just been through the first MOT it shouldn't be a problem over here.

You can check this out on the DVLNI webiste but i'm 100% sure.

Does this not only apply to brand new registered vehicles or have the rules changed recently?

Bought my last car in Aug 08 in England, got NI plate when taxing it and only cost me the price of the tax - that's always been the case for me

    Good Afternoon together.

I have now picked up the car from england, and am pretty happy with it. There is only one thing that I have to figure out.

The Car came with a new MOT which had been done in england. I received the current MOT certificate, but it seems in England they don't get a MOT Disc and that therefore they don't need to display it.

In NI on the other hand it appears that you need to display it. Do I need to get a MOT Disc, and where can I get it, if needed?

    Regards,

I just realised that it seems I have nothing to worry about, as Cars in NI only need to get MOT'ed first after 4 years, and my car is only 3 years old.

They dont charge this for registering a used car from the mainland, all you have to pay for is having new plates made up if you decide to change the registration to a N I one, otherwise keep the original one at no cost at all
  • A friend was telling me recently that he brought his fathers car here from Wales and when it came time for the MOT, he had it bkd in for it a couple of weeks prior to the date the old MOT was running out. The car passed and the MOT people put the date he had the MOT done here rather than the date the old MOT was running out. He lost 2 weeks and recommended doing the new MOT nearer the due date. The MOT people said it was because it was the first time it was MOT'd here and viewed as an import. Just something to consider next year when it's due.
