broken laptop from currys

Hi this is my first post on here so i am hoping that someone can help me.
My daughters laptop has just stopped working and have no reason why but i rang currys to see when the warranty ends as i couldn't find my receipt and they told me it ended about 2 weeks ago so i asked about an extended warranty to get the laptop fixed and they said no i couldn't do that, so then i asked how much it would cost to get it fixed and they said it will cost £120 just for someone to look at it, there is no way i can afford that or to buy a new laptop.
Please there must be some way around this as she needs it for school work and i really can not afford a new one.
Thanks in advance for any help

well you could go into a cheaper laptop shop, we have loads around here named ''laptop repair 4 u'' etc something stupid, they will look at it and try and fix it , definatley cheaper than currys!!!!!
did you not take out the extended guareentee then? you have just reminded me that i need to do that as it covers everything even spillages.
also post on the techie board someone might be able to help.
it COULD just be the battery charger has died [ happened to my mate]

No my ex partner bought the laptop for her last year and been a tightwad he never took out an extended warranty0

ask on the techie board - quite likely it can be fixed at minimal cost
when you say it stopped working - explain exactly what it does do when you try to start it.0 -
it does nothing it won't charge at all and we got a new AC adaptor in june (when it was still under the warranty)!! so not sure if it's just that or the battery or the laptop it's self thats not working0

You could maybe claim for it on your household insurance.Thats what i did and got a brand new laptop.0

For now, can you take out the battery and plug it in the mains. It might just be a dead battery.
My Dell battery completely died and it wouldn't work if I plugged it in, but I found if I took the battery out and then plugged it into the mains then it could be operated on mains. Odd, but true. This enabled me to transfer my data off it at least.
I would add that this solution worked for about 7-10 days before it died again.0 -

Yeah have tried that already did speak to the techguys and thats what they said to do i think im just going to have to go into currys tomorrow and demand that they fix it lol hope that works anyone got any advice on what to say to them though???0 -
Complain to the manufacturer, say you're surprised that it went wrong only two weeks out of warranty etc. I've done this with a few bits and they have always come through. Be nice, praise how good it was etc and how disappointed as you bought their make thinking it would be a good choice. Basically butter them up then hit them with the fault. Do this snail mail - emails are too easy to 'lose'.
Don't forget one point - it did not last a "reasonable length of time"What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
The consumerdirect website is very good or give them a call on 08454 04 05 06.

They helped me when Zavvi would not replace a headset that was broken and they can tell you the law in terms of how long things should last.0 -
Use the phrase it is " no longer fit for purpose " its from the Sale Of Goods Act and sometimes they panic and give in0
